Ladies, you know what I’m talking about; that horrible time of month when you feel bloated, cranky, emotional, head-achy and you suffer from period cramps.

Menstrual cramps are caused by the contractions of the uterus as it pushes out its fertile layer of blood. Some women find their cramps very painful and others have cramps that are merely annoying or uncomfortable. Some women will take pain killers for their cramps and other prefer to relieve them in drug-free ways.

There are plenty of ways that you can reduce the pain and discomfort of your period so that this time of the month doesn’t cramp your style. Here are some tips for surviving the monthly curse, from using a tens machine to getting some exercise:

Heating Pads

Placing a hot water bottle or a heating pad directly on your lower abdomen can help to ease some of the discomfort of period pains. The heat will help your muscles to relax and will reduce the pain of the cramping. If you don’t have access to a heating pad, you can also try soaking for a while in a very hot bath.

Get Some Exercise

Going to the gym might be the last thing you want to do when you are on your period, but physical activity can do wonders to reduce the pain of your cramps. It helps to increase blood flow to the area so that the cramps will go away.

Try a Tens Machine

Have you ever tried using a tens machine to help with your painful period cramps? A tens machine is a very safe and drug free way to reduce cramps. It is a small device that you can wear clipped within your trousers or underwear and it is extremely small and discreet. The electrodes of the tens machine can be kept in place all day long and used whenever needed.

Eat Omega-3s

Did you know that eating foods that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids can help reduce the discomfort of period pains? This nutrient will block the production of your prostaglandins which are what cause large muscle contractions such as the ones that are currently occurring in your uterus.

Do Some Yoga

Another great way to relieve the pain of your period is to do some yoga. This type of ancient soothing exercise is great for distracting yourself from the pain as you focus on the stretches instead. It will also open up your hips and give a pleasant stretch to your lower back and abs. Yoga is also known to increase blood flow, reduce stress and give you an overall feeling of well-being.

Having your period can be a real pain, especially when you suffer from bad cramps. With the help of a tens machine, some light exercise and these other treatments you will be feeling better in no time.
