Cotton and textile sectors have played an important role in the economic development of the Pakistani Industry. It accounts for 11 percent of the GDP and 38 percent of the total manufacturing of the country. Cotton and textile are very active in the trading sector. They account for almost 60 percents of the Pakistan export receipts. This is due to the fact that cotton has been a major industrial crop for Pakistan. In fact, Pakistan is the fourth largest cotton producer in the world. Moreover, the cost effective labor force and the state of the art machinery that are acquired by the textile industries to help manufacture high quality cotton products, the textile industries are able to export its products at lower prices than its competitors. These competitors are its neighboring countries like India, Bangladesh and China. In addition to this, the lifting of the quotas on the Pakistan exports in 2007 by the United States, resulted in high a high demand for Pakistani cotton products. According to the Federal Minister of Commerce, Pakistan cotton exports were enhanced by 22 percent to $22 billion during the current fiscal year in comparison to the exports worth $18 billion in the previous fiscal year. This is due to the above reasons and the other favorable policies adopted by the Pakistani government such as export subsidies which motivated growth of cotton and manufacturing of different cotton products.
The cotton products that are exported include apparel, bed sheets, comforters, pillows, garments, home furnishing, curtains, upholstery fabrics, hand gloves, tents, socks and towels. 50 percent of these products are imported by the USA, 30-35 percent is imported by the European countries and the remaining 15 percent is imported by other countries around the world like South America, Singapore, Indonesia, etc. While cotton fabrics are on the top of the list for export, Pakistani cotton yarn and raw cotton are also high in demand. Pakistan grows surplus amount of best quality long staple American Upland cotton. This raw cotton is highly demanded by countries like U.K, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Belgium, Indonesia, Italy, Singapore and Bangladesh.
The increased cotton export does not promise a good future for the textile industry in Pakistan. The cotton market is getting more competitive and if positive changes are not adopted every year, Pakistan may lose some of its big customers. Therefore, there is always a need for constant improvement especially for quality purposes. The textile industry tries its level best to keep itself updated with the latest machines in order to manufacture high quality products. Even the government issues various incentives to encourage cotton growth and make the cotton industry attractive for new firms in the market. Due to the favorable climatic conditions for cotton gives an edge to Pakistan over its competitors, Pakistan tries to use this to its advantage by specializing in cotton products. If the government keeps providing incentives and companies keep improving their quality and offer better prices for its products then its competitors, Pakistan may not be far from becoming the biggest exporter of cotton and textile products.
