Candida is a common yeast infection that affects both men and women. Learn some of the most common signs and symptoms that you may be suffering from a yeast infection.
Yeast infection has many different names - Candida (Candidiasis), thrush, athlete’s foot and even jock itch. No matter what you call it, Candida is a naturally occurring yeast-like fungus, that is so common that you may not even realise you have it. If left undiagnosed, yeast infections do more than cause great discomfort for most sufferers - it can lead to more serious diseases which not only weaken your immune system, but may even be life-threatening in the long run. Watch out for the following ten signs you might have yeast infection.

Generally, a yeast infection will produce five symptoms which will almost always come together, no matter which kind of Candidiasis someone may be afflicted with.

1. The affected body part itches severely. Yeast infections prefer to grow in areas of the body where scratching would be next to impossible, such as the mouth or the vagina. Human skin affected by yeast infection will often have a red rash, which may be more pronounced in skin patches with hair growing on them.

2. On one hand, the afflicted body part feels a burning sensation or is sore to the touch, but may not actually cause blisters or even itchiness. On the other hand, the afflicted body part can feel tingly or numb. This lack of sensation doesn’t mean that this part of the body is safe from getting a yeast infection.

3. You may feel an increased sensitivity to different types of chemicals. Triggers include sugar, refined carbohydrates (also known as most processed food), antibiotics and of course, yeast.

4. Your mental and physical coordination are affected. Sufferers have trouble balancing themselves or moving in the way they want. They cannot focus properly on tasks, and become lazy through no fault of their own. Other indicators include mood swings and heightened negative emotions.

5. For genitalia and the digestive system, there is a white or whitish mucous discharge. You may see white or whitish patches in the mouth. Both the discharge and the patches have the consistency and smell of bread or a light cheese, though the smell can also be associated with beer.

Other symptoms of Candida can affect a specific part of the body.

6. Oral Candidiasis can cause dryness inside the mouth. It may become difficult to swallow normally as the tongue may start to crack and the gums bleed. Fissures can also appear at the corners of the mouth.

7. Gastrointestinal Candidiasis can result in an upset digestive system. The stomach in particular will commonly feel bloated due to constipation, or it acts up due to abdominal cramps or diarrhea - or sometimes both. Bowel movement is not spared either, because yeast infection causes irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.

8. Symptoms of Respiratory Candidiasis include persistent coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Another indicator is a feeling of constant chest pain or tightness.

9. Women are usually the primary victims of Genitourinary Candidiasis, but men are also just as susceptible - and not just from sexual intercourse. Sufferers of this yeast infection may feel pain during intercourse and the need to urinate becomes more urgent. Women may have suffer from unusual menstrual cramps while men may have Prostatitis - an inflammation of the prostate gland.

10. Yeast infections can also cause chronic eye inflammation and irritation of the conjunctivae (the mucous that covers the white area of your eye). The retina, the nerve-ended part which captures images for the brain, may try to defend itself against a yeast infection and start to collect pus inside an inflamed tissue pocket. Unfortunately, this may lead to permanent damage to your eyesight.

One final word of caution: despite the fact that you can name ten signs that you might have yeast infection, it’s possible that you may not suffer any symptoms at all. Or you may be suffering symptoms similar to those of other diseases, so it’s always a good idea that you consult your doctor or health professional for a proper diagnosis.
