With every change that has occurred in the world in the recent times, the programme quality in Television has also changed. Why we still think that Television only spoils children and why don’t we think the other way round that it depends on the parents what programmes they should allow their children to watch in the TV. Apart from the entertainment segment of the TV, there is a lot that TV offers to the children so that they can learn something from it.

When there is a TV kept at home, children cannot be stopped from watching it. In that case, parents should guide them what programmes to watch and what not to watch. The notion that watching TV is bad for children can be proved wrong if they are made to watch educational programmes. Television telecasts many good educational programs through which children can learn many new things easily. We don’t realize but we can use TV as an effective medium for education.

Television gives all the fresh information which we cannot find in books always. It provides the children as well as the adults about new discoveries and even about the places that many of us have never been. In fact, Doordarshan in collaboration with UGC telecasts some educational programmes for children with an aim at teaching them simple geometry, physics and even geography. Most of these kinds of programmes are telecasted on Sundays so that children do not miss a chance to watch those programmes. Not only these programmes help the toddlers to improve themselves in education but even the cartoon channels are helpful for the children. The channels like Cartoon Network, Pogo, etc. help them to be more imaginative and creative.

We blame TV when children start spending more time to it than to their study hours, but is it not the parents who should be blamed for it? Now, the question arises how and why parents should be blamed. Well, parents have their full control over their children, especially when they are very small. It is the parents only who can suggest and even make it mandatory what to watch in TV and what should be the time they spare for TV. It is true that children often get attracted to the programmes that they should not watch. It is important for them to choose the right Television programmes for the age of the children. In this way, they can learn many useful things that they miss in day to day life.

If we think only the educational programmes can help the children then it would be an injustice to the soap operas if we say that they are the reasons behind spreading venom on the minds of the people. Sometimes, soap operas also teach certain manners and etiquettes that are necessary to lead a social life with the other members in the society. Parents should accompany their children while watching these types of programmes in the Television so that they can help the children to figure out what they should absorb and what they should ignore from the programmes.
