A recent study by the National Sleep Foundation has revealed that 43% of people rarely or never get a good night’s sleep. Technology is being blamed, but is this really the case?
|
What’s the problem?
The study, which covered Americans of all ages and backgrounds, has revealed that people’s sleep patterns are in the worst state ever seen. Children on average lose 50 hours a sleep* a month due to technology, with 1 in 10 claiming to being woken up by texts or e-mails. 61% of all adults claim to be using a laptop in bed at least a few nights a week and persons aged 46-64 are watching an ‘unhealthy’ amount of television in bed.
What causes the sleep loss?
The glow from the screens of laptops and mobile phones is reported to stem the flow of a hormone named melatonin, which helps your body succumb to sleep. The fast paced life that we are all subject to requires us to be in contact 24/7 and social networking sites such as Facebook are called to the dock. 19% of people under 25 are reported to post to Twitter or Facebook when they wake up during the night.
Although the trends with regards the technology are convincing, there may be other forces at work. The increased pace of life in the modern age causes high levels of stress which may contribute to sleep loss. Modern attitudes towards alcohol may also be a contributing factor, as studies have proved that “moderate amounts of alcohol consumed within an hour of bedtime appears to disrupt the second half of the sleep period”.
What can be done about it?
As 95% of people use technology before bed, this is no easy challenge to overcome. Many people are going about it the wrong way, though, as excess caffeine from energy drinks or coffee consumed the morning after a long night may lie dormant in the system through the course of the day and cause disturbed sleep the next night. A huge proportion of people who cannot sleep also tend to turn the TV or laptop back on which in turn makes it harder to sleep.
Experts recommend turning off the gadgets well before bedtime and trying to relax with a non-stimulating and non-alcoholic drink such as tea. Lowering the lights can also help along with scheduled bed times in your double mattress.
