Your belongings have been loaded into the car for your first ever cross-country trip. A little while into the trip you need to check the map because you’ve reached an intersection you’re not familiar with. You suddenly panic, because now you can’t find the route map. You recollect the directions given and keep on going. Unfortunately, you never reach your destination but land up going in circles. Too many of us treat goal setting the same way. We dream about where we want to go, but don’t have a map to get there. The first thing about a distorted goal is a distorted or no plan. Provided below are a few points that you need to know about setting goals:
1. Ensure the goal you are working for is something you really want, not just something that sounds good: In the process of setting goals it is very important to remember that your goals must be consistent with your values.
2. A goal should not contradict with any of your other goals. For example, if you earn 1500 rupees a month, you can’t afford installing a dish antenna, with your first salary. This is called non-integrated thinking and will sabotage all of the hard work you put into your goals. Non-integrated thinking can also hamper your everyday thoughts. We should continually strive to eliminate contradictory ideas from our thinking.
3. Specific goals work best at bringing about a change, Instead of saying, I'm going to do more for the environment" say, "I'm going to install a solar panel and recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines or for a new home,” think specifically like “A 4,000 square foot contemporary with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths and a view of the mountain on 20 acres of land "
4. Allow time for changes to set in and don’t be impatient. For example: To wake up early everyday, your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you're doing is part of your regular routine before it can become part of your habit.
5. Remind yourself of what you want and what you're working for. This way, you are actually training your brain to make it happen.
6. Be responsible for your goal. You must accomplish it not only because your mother or father desired it, but because you feel about it just as much.
7. Look around potholes and jump over obstacles on your way.
8. Think and write out your goal in positive: Your subconscious mind is a very efficient tool, it can not determine right from wrong and it does not judge. It only carries out instructions given to it very much like a robot. The more positive instructions you give it, the more positive results you will get.
9. Review your goals daily in the positive.
10. Visualize your goal.
11. One last thing every decision taken should take me closer to, or further from my goal.
If you follow this process everyday you will be on your way to achieving unlimited success in every aspect of your life.
