As the competition heated up, people were waiting for new Indica and Indigo series for a longer time.Similar to the Indica, Indigo too created a segment for itself and succeeded. Indigo launched as an executive sedan gradually positioned down as an entry level sedan and went on to win many hearts. The compact sedan variant of Indigo called Indigo CS is also being received well. But when Tata’s arch rival Maruti spinned a wonder car – Dzire, customers fell hard.
Though Tata’s concept of multi variants – Indigo CS, Indigo,Indigo Marina and Indigo XL has managed to make up decent numbers, it is nowhere near the Dzire’s one. The overwhelming response for Dzire has even made Toyota’s and Volkswagen’s to think. Unlike the old Indigo, the Indigo Manza looks cohesive and well put out. Tata’s distinct smiley grille is bounded by barrel shaped headlamsp. Sharing of components is always good for automakers but not for the customers. Customers love exclusivity and they don’t wish a cut-down car. Headlamps borrowed from the Vista, doesn’t gel well with the car. The protruding bumper is separated from the hood by a chrome strip. From the side, looks a homogeneous not booted. The sharp shoulder line which intersects the door handles merges with boomerang tail lamps. A long chrome strip runs across the boot dominates the rear.
We picked the Manza Diesel first (test drive report on Manza Safire will be out soon) and drove it around Tata’s pune plant and in the test track. Drive the manza for few kilometeres, you would say the powertrain is much refined compared to indigo’s one. However, the turbo lag is evident and taller gearing for higher fuel efficiency makes it less fun. Remember, these sedans are not meant for fun making but to commute the family. It zooms past 100kmph in 16 seconds and overall fuel efficiency is little above 13kmpl. Following the lines of Indica Vista, Manza’s dash looks more upmarket. The two tone dash with centrally mounted multi information display (unlike the vista, the instrument panel is now behind the steering wheel). Plastic quality has improved by leaps. But roll your eye carefully, you will spot the ill-fitting panels (on steering wheel and glove box). Also the use of crude plastics on door latches shows the room for improvement. The well-bolstered,height adjustable driver seat and rake adjustable steering enables you to find the comfortable driving position.
Front seats have 2-way adjustable lumbar support too. Adding to the convenience is the electrically adjustable mirrors. Manza is a much improved version of Indigo. Manza inherits the USPs of Indigo series – space and features, while moving up the ladder in other fronts. The quality has gone up and the engines are now proven Fiat’s unit. It has safety features too. What else we can expect from a sedan? At this price tag, Manza is a steal but only if Tata assures better customer care.
