Candida Albicans is a naturally occurring variety of yeast that is found in our intestinal areas. Results of living a stressful lifestyle
Unfortunately, today’s hectic and stressful lifestyle frequently plays havoc with our diet and most people these days end up eating a large and unhealthy amount of processed foods, fats, sugars etc. This in turn causes the Candida yeast to multiply and spread at a rapid rate. The excess levels of Candida in the gut causes a multitude of problems including chronic fatigue, rashes, eczema, flatulence and bloating of the stomach, indigestion and even depression and mood swings.
What is Candida diet ?
The Candida diet was formulated to combat these symptoms and bring down the body’s Candida levels back to normal. As such, the diet typically starts with a Candida cleanse: a colon cleanse either through dietary means or through colonic irrigation. This is generally a 7 to 14 day program and involves, among other things, the taking in a special detox broth and detox drink at regular intervals over the course of a day along with plenty of water to stay hydrated.
During this period, it is imperative to avoid dairy products of any sort, especially aged cheese (cheese that is more than six months old). This is because the excessive Candida in the intestine prevents the proper digestion of the fats in these products and can end up causing the system to overload.
Similarly, stay away from starchy vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, yams, corn, squashes (except zucchini), parsnips, beets, peas and beans (except green beans). Also stay away from all fruits (except lemons), fresh as well as dry, and especially preserved or tinned fruit. Meat products and breads are other food groups to be avoided.
This may seem a little extreme but the truth is all these food products are rich in sugar and fat which will only stimulate the growth of the intestinal yeast, thus proving counterproductive to the Candida Cleanse. Preservatives too will only suppress friendly bacteria and allow the Candida yeast to flourish.
In short, the best diet for this period is one of raw salads and steamed vegetables. These dishes can be made surprisingly tasty with salt, pepper, lemon juice and various herbs and spices.
