Take Care of Your Digital Photos

Just because you don’t print out majority of your photos doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of your pictures.
When you were a child, your parents would take dozens of pictures each vacation, birthday or family gathering and later on would get them developed and organize in photo albums, often adding funny or meaningful captions. With time scrapbooking became very popular, turning photo albums into little works of art with dried out flowers, ribbons, cut outs and drawings decorating the pictures. These days, when most family photography is digital, a lot of pictures never make it onto the paper, remaining digitalized forever, so the need for photo albums is decreasing. Just because you don’t print out majority of your photos, however, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of your pictures.

You still go on vacation, spend holidays and birthdays with your family and friends, taking even more pictures now that you don’t have to worry that a film only allows so many shots. Now you can take hundreds of photos and go through them one by one later on to delete ones that are out of focus or poorly lit, you can snap the shots without much aiming or preparation, because the camera does most of the work for you. But after each occasion you’re left with hundreds of photos and often instead of going through them to only leave good shots, you keep them all in a folder. It’s about time you sat down in front of your monitor or with your graphics tablet in hand and got rid of all the poor photos.

After you delete all the bad ones and are left with only the good photos, you should organize them so they can be viewed as a coherent slide show. It would be a good idea to utilize your web design skills to create a front page for each separate group of photos and to add some captions while you still remember who is in the picture, when and where it was taken, what the occasion was. That way you’ll be left with digital photo albums you can record onto discs that you can label and keep for future viewing, or you can even make into gifts for everybody present during a graduation party or a holiday gathering.

A lot of people take thousands of photos but forget about them the minute they transfer the pictures from the camera’s memory card onto computer, often leaving them on the hard drive and hardly ever going back to them. Since it’s not necessary to develop the pictures to take a look at them, most people don’t print their photos, content with the ability to view them on the screen. However, computers break, hard drives get corrupted, and losing your whole photo collection can be a matter of seconds, so you might want to do a thorough selection and print out your very favorite pictures, portion by portion, and move all the photos in digital albums onto discs or flash drives, s that you never have to regret having taken thousands of pictures but being left with only the ones that didn’t get lost because you haven’t transferred them onto your computer before it crashed.
