The future tense, like the present and the past tenses, has four sub-tenses. These are the simple future tense, future continuous tense, future perfect tense and the future perfect continuous tense. In this article, we will look at the different future tenses in details.

The future tense, like the present and the past tenses, has four sub-tenses. These are the simple future tense, future continuous tense, future perfect tense and the future perfect continuous tense. In this article, we will look at the different future tenses in details.
The most basic form of the future tense is the simple future tense. We use the word ‘will’ in this tense. This is used to talk about an action which is going to happen in the future.
Examples :
Maria will eat lunch. This sentence simply means that Maria has not eaten yet and she will eat in the future.
George will watch television. This example means that George will watch television at a future time.
The second form of the future tense is the future continuous tense. We use ‘will be’ and the verb + ing. This tense is used to talk about an continuous action which will be happening at a particular time in the future.
Examples :
Maria will be eating lunch at 2 pm. This sentence means that at that particular time in the future, 2 p.m. in this case, Maria will be eating lunch.
George will be watching television in the evening. Similarly, in this example, we mean that watch television would be a continuing action in the evening.
The third form of the future tense is the future perfect tense. This is a slightly more complicated tense. We use the words ‘will have’ in the future perfect tense. This tense talks about an action which will have been completed by a particular time in the future.
Examples :
Maria will have eaten lunch by 3 p.m. In the example, we imply that by 3 pm in the future, the action of eating lunch would have been completed by Maria.
George will have watched television by 9 p.m. Here, we say that by 9 pm, George will have finished the action of watching television.
The last form of the future continuous tense is the future perfect continuous tense. As the name suggests, this is a combination of the future perfect tense and the future continuous tense. We use the words ‘will have been’ and the verb + ing form. This tense is used to talk about an continuing action in the future before a particular time.
Examples :
Maria will have been eating lunch when you will come. In the example, we say that eating lunch would be a continuing action when you will come.
George will have been watching television when I go to sleep. In this sentence, we mean that George will still be watching television when I go to sleep.
