The condition where the toenail or fingernail gets separated from nail bed is called Onycholysis. This is a common nail disorder. The process of separation of the nail is a very painful process. Separation happens at a distal free margin the support for the nail form its nail bed is lost. Under normal circumstances the separation occurs from the top to the bottom that is from the free end to the base. But, in some cases in can also occur the other way round that is from the base to the top of the nail. It has been reported that this fungal nail infection occurs more in females than in male. It is very important to treat this or else the nail bed gets scarred forever.

Causes of Onycholysis: The most common causes are said to be trauma; allergy and exposing the hands or the legs to water for a very long time. The other factors are fungal infections, thyroid dysfunctions etc. It has been recorded that this disease can also be hereditary. Sometime allergy due to the use of some medicines can also cause Onycholysis. Prolonged use of nail polish removers, coming into regular contact with yeast is also a cause to this disease.

Symptoms: It is sometimes difficult to find the symptoms as the nails affected with Onycholysis are not different from the normal nails. The only symptom would be a slight discoloration. Treatment for this should start as soon as the disease is diagnosed if not the nails can turn yellow or green with time and causes serious damage to the nail bed.

Treatment: Onycholysis treatment varies according to the symptoms. To find out if the nails are affected or not mycologic tests are done on the affected parts of the patient. If these tests do not show any results then nail biopsy should be done. Some patients are also given intralesional injections in the affected portion of the nail.

Care to be taken: Care should be taken to keep the affected part clean and dry. No moisture or chemicals should come in contact with the affected part as exposure to water or chemicals can aggravate the situation even further. It is advisable to wear thin cotton gloves or socks to protect the hands and legs. One should keep away from trauma and stay away from anything that can cause injury. After the treatment is over also, it is better to keep the nails short and avoid using nail polish removers etc. With proper care nails would grow back to normal within a few months.
