Super Bowl host committee leaders announced plans on Tuesday to begin more than $10 million worth of improvements that will benefit the area’s near east side.

The Indianapolis 2012 Super Bowl host committee has announced plans for the big game to now include the completion of roughly $10 million of infrastructure improvements that will include upgrades at a nearby high school and the creation of a new NFL youth education center for the areas rising stars.
The “Legacy Projects,” as they are being called, intend to bring improvements, not temporary upgrades, which will remain in place long after the 2012 Super Bowl is over.
Neighbors near the stadium say the fence that surrounds Arsenal Tech High School has always given the imposing compound the feeling of being in the community, but not of the community. Soon, school and community leaders hope to change that perception with millions of dollars of improvements.
The NFL Youth Education Town -- or YET center -- will be the heart of the improvements. The facility will be housed at the southeast corner of the Arsenal Tech football field. At a Tuesday afternoon news conference, 2012 Super Bowl host committee leaders said their vision is grand.
"The building itself is gonna be a little jewel, but not so little. 26,000 to 27,000 square feet," Mark Miles, chair of the Indianapolis 2012 Super Bowl committee told local reporters earlier this month.
The new facility will house sports leagues, science, math, and technology programs, as well as arts interests, and it will be open to the community to use after hours, on weekends and during summers. With the near east side needing some form of a community center for youth, the project is generating a lot of community support.
Also benefiting from 2012 revitalization is the University of Indianapolis. Plans were already under way to turn a stretch of land into the U-Indy student athletics and recreation center. Now the 2012 Super Bowl Host committee plans to use the new facility as a NFC practice site. So U-Indy will receive funding to enhance the structure according to NFL specifications, a real treat for student athletes.
"Bringing in this new athletic facility, it will give us a whole lot more space," said Max Davis, a U-Indy football player.
U-Indy will break ground on its new facility in May and it will be complete this fall. The 2012 Super Bowl committee said it did not have a figure as of now for how much it plans to give U-Indy to help fund construction of the project.
Speaking of “prep news,” have you heard about the 2012 Super Bowl “Superscarves” project? Relying on an army of knitters the project’s goal is to give all eight thousand Super Bowl volunteers a handmade scarf, to both seve as a keepsake, but also help keep them warm during the game. February in Indianapolis does get pretty darn cold, and the scarves will be a bright spot on the game’s community spirit.
So knitters and crocheters are "scarfing up the idea." More than two thousand scarves have been submitted to the Super Bowl Host Committee as of this month. Anyone can submit a scarf and the scarf requirements are limited in length, width and, of course, color.
In case you missed it, it was also announced earlier this month by Bloomberg News that The National Football League will provide free tickets to next year’s Super Bowl, plus $2,400 each to about 400 fans who were barred from temporary seating at the Dallas championship game. The NFL and Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, was trying to break the Super Bowl mark of 103,985, set at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California in 1980, by putting in temporary stands above the end zones, along the sidelines and selling standing- room only tickets for stairwells. Not all the work was completed and some of the seats remained vacant because of safety concerns.
