Sundarban is a combined forest in Bangladesh and India and a haven for photographers and travelers. It is biggest mangrove forest in the world and is a treasure island of biodiversity. The Sundarban has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The part of the forest within Indian Territory is called Sundarban National Park and is in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
An area of 38,500 sq km is covered by Sundarbans, of which about one-third is covered in water/marsh areas. Since 1966, the Sundarban have been a wildlife sanctuary, and it is estimated that there are now 400 Royal Bengal tigers and about 30,000 spotted deer in the area. Indian Sundarban is bound on the west by river Muriganga and on the east by rivers Harinbhahga and Raimangal. Other major rivers flowing through this ecosystem are Saptamukhi, Thakuran, Matla and Goasaba.
Sundarban has extremely rich diversity of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna. Sundarban’s highly productive ecosystem acts as a natural fish nursery. Sundarban Mangrove acts as strong barrier as it reduces the furious cyclonic storm and prevents erosion due to tidal action. Millions of people depend on Sundarban ecosystem for their livelihood and sustenance through fishing, collection of honey and fuelwood/timber. Exhilarating honey collection season is during the period of April till May.
Although the region is situated south of the Tropic of Cancer, the temperature is equable due to its proximity to the sea. The climate of Sundarban is reasonably moderate and the air is moist. Monsoon prevails from June to September During flow the forest becomes austere by six to seven feet and at high tide (30 miles/hour) the entire terrain of the forest submerges on water. The best season to visit Sundarban is from November to March.
