This summer British Gas is helping you to go green.
This summer British Gas is helping you to go green. Did you know that boilers account for 60% of the total CO2 emissions we as individuals produce here in the UK? But this amount can be greatly reduced if we all make the switch to energy-efficient boilers.

In fact, we could save 13 million tonnes of CO2 and enough energy to power 3.4 million homes for year. Furthermore, each of us could save around £275 on our heating bills.

The offer from British Gas is worth £852, so add the £275 saved on your bill and you are looking at well over £1000 in savings this year. The saving includes £400 off a new boiler, free home care for one a year in case something breaks and free radiator and heating controls.

These boilers work on a combination system. By removing the need to store water you can use them as and when you need them. This means that you don’t need to leave the boiler on all night if you want a hot shower in the morning. They still manage to heat the water rapidly and efficiently but require less energy to do so, therefore producing less CO2.

Also, energy efficient boilers, or condensing boilers, periodically condense the water vapour in the tank. It uses a heat exchanger to transfer heat that would normally be expelled through the flue back into usable energy. This means that as much heat as possible is transferred from the boiler’s burner and as little as possible is lost through the exhaust flue.

Make sure your new boiler has a full set of heating controls. These will give you much greater control on the heat level in each room at any given time, meaning less wastage.

You can use timers in the morning for example so that your hot water comes on just before your morning shower. You can also control the temperature in each room using the thermostat controls so that high-trafficked are warmer than those that are rarely used.

In the UK, during our daily routines in the home and in the car, we contribute 40% to Britain’s total greenhouse gas emissions. By making these few small changes, we can make a big difference to our immediate environment and that of the world as a whole
