You can ask as much and as little as you want with your commercial printer, the important thing is that you have enough knowledge to understand the process of commercial printing most specially the areas you are required to work on like the designing stage. So while you are with a commercial printer, ask as much as you can to avoid mistakes and minimize the printing time process.
Assume certain questions your printers may ask you as well to understand your needs. Ask yourself the following questions and add some more -
1. What are your prints do you have in mind?
2. How huge are you expecting your print volume to be?
3. Are you thinking of editing or updating your prints any time soon? Do you really need high grade printing materials?
Once you understand your printing needs, you can easily share this with your printer and to understand the process, ask them the following:
4. Can you share several of your printing methods with me? Which ones would you think could work with my needs?
The more printer’s share their knowledge with you the better. It means they know what they are doing and is confident enough to share their knowledge to you. Good printers also personalize by focusing on certain things they believe works well with your needs.
5. What packages will work with my print needs?
Packages differ with every printer, make sure your printers give you packages that are applicable to your actual need or have some other suggestions that may be better for your particular requirement.
6. Should I need a little assistance with the design, will you be able to help me? Do you have an in-house designer?
Your printers should assist you with the design even if they require additional fees to the service. Professional printers should always have a helping hand ready anytime. Most of them have professional designers to work with you so ask if you can’t do it yourself.
7. Can you do rush printing?
Rush prints are important for people who need faster turn around times than the regular ones. Printers normally say yes to this but they should also tell you that they look at the print volume first, the available materials and the package involved before committing to rush prints, this shows your printer’s professionalism by not accepting something they can not really do at the required time.
8. Can you show me some of your previous print jobs with your favorite clients?
Showing you their samples is a must and you don’t really have to ask for it they should either display in their office for their clients to see or show it to every client they meet up with. The most important thing to check is the quality of the print job, they should show you prints that are near to perfect. Do not consider the printer if they are showing you prints with even little tears or dirt because this means they do not care too much on details which is very important in printing.
Any Commercial printer who means business can easily answer these questions and will most likely go to great lengths just to inform you with everything. Commercial printing is a simple process any one can understand provided that they ask the right questions to attain the right answers.
