Limit time bed to sleep time. If you are going to bed at 22:00, sleeping from 23:30 until 2:00, tossing and turning until 4:00, then sleeping until 6, you have already gotten 8 hours in bed but you just have 4 1/2 hours of sleep. That is really unbalanced, which may actually restrain your sleep drive and cause sleeplessness all by itself. To stop it, when you wake at 2, you need to go read a book in your living room. Being up will add your sleep drive-which could make you sleepy enough to fall asleep when you return to bed.
Control the electronics. It is tough. Few of us can survive for more than 30 minutes without being connected to a cell. Yet the those innovations that should give us more leisure time have instead made it easier for us to work all the time. The problem is that by their very nature, they produce stress by forcing what the specialist calls "a wholly artificial sense of urgency" on us. The minute you phone rings, you tense. And if you phone rings often, you will never get to un-tense. That makes it difficult to cam down at night and go to sleep. The thing is, we do not have to do without our electronics to cut stress. The fact is that we do not need to do without our electronics to reduce stress. All we have to do is manage them. Replay your e-mail three time every day but not each 30 minutes, and power off those instant notification feature. What is more, turn off your cell phone after 6:00 P.M.
Do not stay late at work. The prevailing thought is that you need to stay late to have your work done. But working until bedtime will certainly disrupt your sleep. Therefore, you need to go home at a reasonable hour. The truth is you had better to go home and go to bed, then return to work and do more work in the morning. Studies show that after a good night' sleep, your increased ability to focus means that you can work much faster and more efficient.
Avoid cheching you e-mail. At the very last, not doing this before bed. Researchers have found that the light from monitor just before going to bed can reset your whole sleep/wake cycle and can postpone your sleepiness by three hours.
