Butane lighters are high-quality, reliable devices that can provide years of service to their owners. The fuel they use is clean-burning and imparts no flavor to tobacco. That fuel, however, does require some care where storage is concerned.
Butane becomes a liquid under pressure. If one shakes the can, they'll hear the butane sloshing about. When the fuel is dispensed, the reduction in pressure causes it to become a gas. As it fills the reservoir, the pressure increases again resulting the butane reassuming its liquid state. This transition from liquid to gas is very important to understanding how to store this fuel.
If the can of butane is exposed to heat beyond the maximum temperature indicated on the warning label, the liquid will expand. This will increase the pressure on the can and, in extreme cases, can result in a rupture. Most of these cans are designed so that the valve will rupture first but this will still result in a cloud of butane gas being released into the air. Butane combusts very quickly and, if there is open fire or sparks nearby, it is almost certain to create a fireball.
The tip on a butane can must be kept clean to ensure proper flow of the fuel from the can to the lighter. Make certain to always replace the cap that comes with the can. If debris gets into the release valve, there is really no way to clear it if tapping isn't sufficient. Sticking anything in the tip is highly inadvisable as it may release butane into the air. While this gas isn't overly-dangerous, it's certainly something which one does not want to inhale under any circumstances! Make certain to keep the can secure and in a cool location.
Butane needs to be stored in a cool place. Heat can cause the can to rupture as readily as can mistreatment. Likewise, the cans need to be insulated from very cold temperatures which can cause the fuel to dispense improperly. This fuel is best stored in a locked location safely out of reach of any young ones. Be certain not to leave cans of this fuel in a car on a sunny day, as well, as the temperatures in vehicles on such days easily reach levels that can cause the can to explode.
