One of the most important things an expecting mother can do for her unborn child is to quit smoking. Research has shown that smoking during pregnancy can have significant negative effects on the developing fetus. Though everyone is very much aware of the effects on the body, some may not be able to see the long term effects of smoking on the child. If you do not get the proper help you need as soon as possible, you could be jeopardizing the health of your child as he or she continues to grow. Also, the effects of smoking during pregnancy, has negative repercussions not only on the baby but has continual implications through childhood and possibly into adulthood.
Low birth weight is the main reason of diverse infant diseases, disability, and stillbirth. More than that, it is also one of the prime causes of cot death in babies. It is a proven fact that cigarette smoking can increase the risk of a wide variety of pregnancy complications including premature rupture of membranes, vaginal bleeding and premature placental detachment just as a few examples. The effects of smoking during pregnancy can also cause genetic abnormalities, Such as cleft lip and cleft palate. Also, bowel problems can be experienced. Other abnormalities can occur in sensory systems such as the eyes and ears. There has not been enough scientific research done to determine all of the chemicals found in tobacco that are harmful to a developing baby, however fetal exposure to both nicotine and carbon monoxide can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Smoking during pregnancy affects a mother's breast milk. Not only can it reduce a mother's supply, but the harmful chemicals can also be passed to the nursing infant, who can develop diarrhea, nausea, cramping, and vomiting from the effects. Medications are dangerous for expecting mothers and most of them even say so on the label. Nicotine is one of the most harmful chemicals in cigarettes for your baby so you do not want to use the patch or any nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that feeds nicotine into your system. Baby's that are born to mothers who smoke during their pregnancy are more likely to have a low birth weight, under-developed organs and respiratory diseases.
Nicotine travels through the bloodstream to the brain, and then is delivered to the rest of the body.
80 % of nicotine is broken down to cotinine by enzymes in the liver. A build up of cotinine can act on the womb causing it to contract, or go into labour. Pregnant women who decide to quit smoking are faced with a myriad of smoking cessation choices. But as an expecting mother you have to choose a smoking cessation method that meets your needs. The best method that meets all the criteria listed above is hypnotherapy. It is all natural, has a very high success rate, and works very fast. A particular type of hypnotherapy, called Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is particularly effective. Researchers have found solid proof of the link between smoking during pregnancy and an increased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
