Sweden is a very interesting and beautiful country and its capital is Stockholm. Aside from being the capital of Sweden, it is also their most populous city. Being a part of Europe, you might worry about the health of your lungs due to the air pollution that the region is notoriously known for. Fortunately, Stockholm is actually breathing-friendly – it is one of the cleanest and industrious places around the globe. The city is not home to air-polluting manufacturing companies instead the workforce is focused on providing quality service to the general consuming public.
As far as the economy is concerned, the city thrives because giant technology companies like IBM and Ericsson have their headquarters here. Stockholm is also where the Royal Institute of Technology is located along with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Royal University of Fine Arts.
Getting to Stockholm
If you are planning a visit to Stockholm, there are several options that you can go for. Those who are from another country can book a flight to Stockholm through three of the major airports here: Arlanda, Skaysta or Vasteras.
After your flight to Stockholm, you can use the extensive subway commuter train and bus system to get around. If you are travelling alone it is best to book your tickets in advance so that you can take advantage of cheaper rates. Those who are taking a flight to Stockholm during the summer months can explore the city by renting a bike key-card. Taxis are a bit expensive here, so make sure to learn about the modes of transportation that you can use especially if you plan to explore some of the off-the-beaten-path destinations in the city.
Places to Visit in the City
After getting to the city through your flight to Stockholm, what should your travel itinerary be like? There are plenty of tourist attractions here, starting from the architectural wonder that is City Hall. Check out the Drottningholm Palace where you can learn more about the Swedish monarchy.
There’s no better way to learn about the past of Stockholm than by going museum hopping. Start by visiting Moderna Museet, the Skansen Museum and the Vasa Museum. Another can’t-miss activity when visiting Stockholm is having a tour of the 24,000 islets and island which make up the city’s archipelago. It stretches to about 80 kilometers from the city center and regular ferry rides are operated by Waxholmsbolaget, running from the months of April through September.
Those who have never been to this part of Europe yet should definitely consider adding Stockholm to their travel itinerary. With about 16% of the people in Stockholm being immigrants, you will definitely feel at home here no matter which part of the world it is you’re from!
