For modern people stories about pirate’s life was limited to books and historical arty-facts until the movies based on their life came out. These movies captured the way pirates lived and behaved. Every fine detailing from their clothing to body language has succeeded in entering the mind set of people. Now when we talk of pirate people easily figure out the whole image but it is a fact that most the images of pirate in these movies are stereotypical in approach, to some extent for a few characters their imagination are right but for others one need to examine more closely.
A typical pirate costume is consist of long coat, knee length breeches, tricorn hat, loose pirate shirt, bucket topped boots or buckled shoes. Film makers took inspiration from images of pirates like Rackham to make their character realistic that got stuck to people’s mind that is why people cerate typical image automatically whenever they found themselves in between of conversation about pirate.
Rackham sense of dressing was more elaborative, it consists of the same typical hat, knee breeches, long coat and buckled shoes while other pirate Robert wore crimson color damask waistcoat and breeches. To decorate hat he kept exotic red feather, wore a gold chain around neck with hanging diamond pendent. Robert (Black Bart) was better dressed pirate captain in comparison to any other pirate, he was a flamboyant dresser.
Medieval clothing of other pirate crew members doesn’t have much to contribute in typical collection of pirate costumes. They used to wear whatever they got from hijacked ship otherwise they dressed as seamen because in actual they were sailors. Another fact is pirate used to wear knee high boots or thigh boots but when they were not combating with opponent and on land. They fought with opponents barefoot for better grip on deck.
Elizabethan era is considered as “Golden age for pirates”. Famous pirate’s style of clothing became synonyms to medieval costumes of freebooters. It was the time of expansion and exploration for both rulers and freebooters. They loved to make mockery of law of land for instance rich fabrics like damask, velvet, taffeta, silk, sarcanet and camlet were only meant for upper strata people but sea rovers commonly use these fabrics. Following are the description of medieval dresses associated with pirates.
Trousers: For seas men it was knee length breeches until in 18th century trousers were introduced and they were among one of the first people who accepted new addition. Shorter open breeches and voluminous ‘petticoat type’ breeches were still popular.
Jackets: Long jackets and coats were famous among a few sea rovers only others chose to wear shorter and straight cut coats because short coats and jackets were convenient during sea exploration.
Hats: If long coat were impractical for sailors then tricorn hat must have been too that was why most of sea rovers preferred to wear knitted caps and furry hats.
Scarves and Sashes: Tight tied scarves around neck, kerchiefs and loosen neck cloths were commonly in use. But the use of sash was not so common especially the bigger one.
Footwear: Just like a few of typical clothes, it was impractical to wear bucket topped boots on deck. Rather majority of pirates preferred to wear simple boots or either remain barefoot.
