With recent Swine flu cases being reported all over the world, for the first time as a flight attendant I am witnessing more and more passengers coming on board airplanes wearing facial masks hoping to limit there exposure to illness and germs. While you can get sick at any time any place home or away, Here is some helpful advice about staying healthy while traveling.

Eat selectively
Culinary is one thing that people are usually looking for when visiting new places. Different kind of food may attract your appetite and curiosity at the same time. But, be careful! Be selective on what you are eating. First of all, make sure that the food meets the hygiene criteria. Secondly, check what the food is made of, especially when you are allergic to some ingredients.

When you travel on a bus, train or airplane you are sitting in close proximity to a large number of people without much air space to share. Unfortunately, many people that are sick with colds and coughs continue to use these various modes of transportation and spread their germs around these close encounters.

As you can see altitude sickness can affect a lot of people and has almost never been talked about before concerning air travel. So how can you protect yourself? The following is a list of suggestions that have been known to reduce the risk of and mitigate the symptoms of high altitude sickness: a slow ascent to high altitude; maintaining adequate hydration levels; use of a dietary supplement containing an ingredient known to reduce the symptoms.

For lunch and special events... Buy a variety of local produce and tasty tidbits at local markets (if farmer's markets are not open, supermarkets are a good alternative too.) By not eating at a restaurant you can save time, money and your figure... This is also a great opportunity to give a needed rest to your stomach and mind, enjoy good weather with locals at the park, concert, etc. You will have a better sense of place: how locals live and eat, how much things cost, etc.

As simple as it sounds, getting enough sleep is vital to being healthy and active and enjoying your holiday. It's all too easy when you are travelling to cram everything in, be constantly on the move during the day and stay out late at night. You have to remember to take it easy, or else you will burn yourself out and make your body more susceptible to illness. Try and plan your days to give you time sit down and relax, plan your travel and sightseeing schedules to minimize travel time.

During the trip itself you should eat lightly yet keep yourself hydrated. Bring bottled water or juice on board with you as it's permitted. If you have problems with flying and it's a lengthy flight, you might consider getting up to stand and walk around the cabin every once in a while. This is a good idea for you to do whether you are prone to air sickness or not, as you can use the circulation on long flights.

While in flight you should do a few stretching exercises to avoid cramped muscles. Yawn frequently or chew gum to de-pressurize your ears. Avoid drinking coffee before and during a flight. Wear comfortable shoes and loose clothing. Include plenty of greens and carbohydrates in your pre-flight meals. Relax as much as possible and take a few deep breaths before boarding a flight.
