The Retrevo Gadget Census gathered responses from households across the country to determine who owns what gadgets. This report, based on data from the census, looks at households from state to state to see which ones have the latest gadgets. Here are the winners in the popular gadget categories.
And The Winners Are…
Apple iPads (Winner New York)
We don’t know who had longer lines outside the Apple store; San Francisco or Manhattan, but New York State comes out on top with 52% more households with at least one iPad. Maybe it’s the ultimate subway companion or a lot of New Yorkers were able to come up with a reason they needed an iPad.
Smartphones (Winner Maryland)
Could it be all those government issued BlackBerry smartphones, the availability of WiMAX, or the thousands of lobbyists who live and work inside the Beltway but little old Maryland beat out the rest of the country with 48% more households with at least one smartphone.
Laptops (Winner Colorado)
Laptops work fine at high altitudes so it’s no wondered that Denver, Boulder and the rest of Colorado have 13% more households with at least one laptop edging out Georgia and Minnesota.
e-Readers (Winner Massachusetts)
With all those colleges, Boston and the rest of Massachusetts must be full of people who love to read and enjoy reading books electronically. In households in Massachusetts, you are 49% more likely to find someone enjoying a book on an e-reader than the average home in other states.
Point and Shoot Cameras (Winner Michigan)
There must be a lot of people in Detroit and other places in Michigan taking pictures of their cars, their friends, their family and anything else that catches their eye because we found a lot of point and shoot cameras in a lot of Michigan households, in fact, Michigan households are 8% more likely to have a point and shoot camera in their home than other states.
Flat Panel TVs (Winner Maryland)
Maryland wins again! Maryland has 13% more homes with at least one flat panel TV. Maybe crabs cakes go well with TV watching or all those government workers need to watch the news shows.
Feature Phone (Winner Pennsylvania)
The dubious honor of having "lower tech" cell phones goes to Pennsylvania where you'll find 14% more households with at least one feature phone. We know the economy hasn’t been great but come on Pittsburgh, the Apple store has some cool smartphones you should check out.
What About California? (Green Award)
California didn’t beat out any state in a household gadget analysis but they did come up on top as the state with the most households recycling gadgets. California households are 47% more likely to have recycled an old gadget in the last year than the average home in other states.
About the Gadget Census
This census was conducted online from March, 2010 through July, 2010 and received over 7,500 individual responses from Retrevo users distributed across gender, age, and location. Responses were weighted based on reported demographics to gain accurate estimations of gadget ownership and usage within and across demographics. All data is therefore reported as weighted data in which most responses have a confidence interval of +/- 4% at a 95% confidence level.
