Sport Apparel
Choosing the right type of sports apparel can be difficult. Depending on what type of activity the individual is participating in, and what type of weather they are experiencing, the recommended type of apparel will be different. Listed below are some common sporting activities with some good examples of the types of apparel that would be best suited when participating in them.
Hiking
Layered clothing is always recommended when out on a hiking or climbing excursion. This will help to make sure that the hiker is prepared for varied or unpredictable weather. A base layer should always be worn in order to absorb sweat. Polypropylene is recommended during cool or winter weather, where polyester micro fiber is best suited for warm summer days. The outer layer should be water resistant and wind proof to protect against the elements.
Shoes and pants need to also be considered. For pants, those created specifically for hiking are the best option. Denim pants or blue jeans should be avoided, and instead breathable fabrics should be selected. Many pants also come in water resistant fabrics. Hikers should also wear comfortable shoes with adequate cushioning that are appropriate for the terrain in which the individual will be hiking.
Cycling
There are two basic categories of sport apparel when it comes to cycling. Performance clothing is usually worn when cyclist ride for an aerobic workout at a fast pace. This clothing is typically tighter fitting in order to provide for a more aerodynamic riding experience. For the recreational cyclist, looser-fitting clothes are acceptable.
Shorts and jerseys are also commonly worn. Cycling shorts are typically extremely tight in order to eliminate chafing, and they are made from a Lycra elastane/nylon blend. Moisture proof padding is also usually included for comfort. Cycling jerseys are made from moisture proof fabric, and they feature ventilating zip packets and a long tail for coverage while riding. Special cycling shoes with soles that disperse pressure onto the pedal and provided added grip to the pedal are also commonly worn.
Running
When running or jogging, the weather will determine what kind of sport apparel should be worn. During hotter weather, shorts made out of nylon or technical fabric work the best. A hat with a visor will keep the sun out of the runner’s eyes and will shield them from rain, wind, or other debris. Sunglasses are also helpful, as they allow the runner to save energy by not having to squint due to the sun being in their eyes.
During cooler months, tights are used as insulation for the legs. These are generally a polyester and Lycra blend to provide warmth. Stretchy, but looser, running pants are also an option. In extremely cold weather, both tights and pants could be worn. A warm hat that covers the ears should be worn on cold or windy days will provide the most warmth. A long sleeved shirt, jacket, or vest should also be used. This outerwear will provide wind-blocking and water-resistant protection against the elements during a run.
Regardless of which type of sport or fitness activity undertaken, having the right sport apparel can be critical to one's success. The right apparel can be a positive partner in one's fitness success.
