These different file formats have different data structures and different file size limit. The earlier versions (2002 or previous) were build on ANSI format that had a 2GB file size limit. A PST file that crosses that limit get automatically corrupted and results as data loss. Since the world is getting faster than one even imagines, the requirement leads towards the creation of Unicode file format that has way more capacity to store data in a single file. The outlook 2003, 2007 and outlook 2010 uses this Unicode file format so that the capacity goes from 2 GB to 20 GB. Now a single PST file can hold up to 20 GB of data and this makes the outlook users store much more in the PST file.</p> <p align="justify">Despite of its file size sooner or later, user will reach to that level and the same problem will be stand with the risk of having the 10 times bigger loss. There are sveral situations that can cause corrpution in the outlook pst file. By compacting you can actially reduce the size of the pst file at some extent and its better than archiving the pst file.</p> <p align="justify">Split PST file is the best way to reduce the file size of the outlook pst fle at any extent as by this you can create smaller Outlook PST files that can work in the same manner as you were using on outlook. There is a tool that comes with the Microsoft outlook called PST2GB that can be use to reduce the file size by truncating some of its data. But it is dangerous, as it may truncate some of its data and hence you should first take the backup of the file and then run the PST2GB tool.</p> <p align="justify">So you should use third party software called PST Split Tool to fix split large PST files into smaller versions.
