An emerging trend has created a new specialization in the medical sonography field, and now, many students are specializing in ophthalmologic sonography to enter this challenging new career. Ophthalmic ultrasound technicians have many important duties to perform, and their schooling can be completed in two years or less. If you want to pursue this career, you will need to find an ultrasound technician schooling program that offers a sub-specialty in ophthalmologic sonography.
The Responsibilities of an Ophthalmologic Sonographer
Ophthalmologic sonographers have a number of important duties related to the diagnoses and treatment of eye-related issues. Sonographers specialize in ultrasounds and other sonographic imagery for medical diagnoses and treatment, or they may also specialize in ultrasounds of fetuses in the womb of expecting mothers. In the case of ophthalmologic sonography, the ultrasound technician would be responsible for making crisp, clean images of various parts of the eye, including the globe and orbit, using high frequency sound waves, which are then passed off to a licensed ophthalmologist who will make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan accordingly.
What to Expect After Completing the Training
If you are going to pursue a career in ophthalmologic sonography, you must find a school that has been accredited to offer ultrasound technician programs by the CAAHEP. After completing an accredited program from an ophthalmic ultrasound college, you may apply for jobs in a variety of settings including clinics, hospitals, labs, schools and other facilities that offer medical and vision care. The job outlook is good for this career, so graduates should be able to find work within a short period of time after completing the program and becoming certified to work in this field. As an entry level ophthalmologic ultrasound technician, you can expect to earn around $35,000 annually, but this salary can reach as high as $80,000, with factors such as experience, location and additional training.
More and more students are specializing in ophthalmologic sonography these days due to the expansion of new jobs in this career field, and as a result, there are more schools offering these programs to meet the demand. There are traditional universities, community colleges, vocational schools, technical institutes and online universities offering ultrasound technology education for students pursuing sonographic careers such as this. It is a great time to get into this field that offers steady work, good pay, medical benefits and the rewards of helping people see better.
