Sony Ericsson was one of the bigger names in the smartphone industry. It was widely known for Android handsets such as the sleekly designed Arc S and the PlayStation-certified Play. However, when the company announced losses amounting in the hundreds of millions last year, it's safe to say that the phone manufacturer was no match against other Android manufacturers such as Samsung with its highly popular Galaxy S2 and Cupertino firm Apple with its flagship the iPhone 4S. This 2012, the company plans to change its fortunes. Its new handset the XPERIA S sparks the Japanese company's new era in smartphone technology.
If you've noticed, we said Japanese company instead of the partnership between Japan and Sweden. This is because Sony decided to buy out Ericsson's shares in the venture and has made the smartphone arm purely Japanese owned. One of Sony's reasons was SE's inability to better compete with other giants in the industry. This is all about to change with their new handset.
Everything about this new smartphone speaks about Sony's new outlook in phone design. Previously, SE handsets were left behind when it came to the hardware arena. When handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation hit the market, they sported dual-core processors. SE handsets were stuck with single-core efforts. This has all changed with the XPERIA S.
This new Android smartphone sports a 1.5 dual-core CPU that is one of the most powerful CPUs in its class. Another handset to sport a similar CPU is the HTC Sensation XE. With this workhorse under the hood, you are sure to enjoy more from smooth executions and effortless multi-tasking. You can run multiple apps simultaneously. You can also run the most demanding applications such as games with ease.
The Sony XPERIA S also boasts one of the most powerful camera sensors among all smartphones in the market. It sports a 12 megapixel rear-facing camera that can record videos at 1080p (full HD). It also sports a 1.3 megapixel front-facing for video calls. This secondary camera can record videos at 720p (HD).
Design-wise, Sony has made improvements in the overall looks of their newly released Android handset. From its 4.3 inch LED-backlit LCD to its body, everything seems to flow into one striking piece of art. Found on the bottom of the handset is a transparent band that compliments the smartphone's overall design.
Upon first glance at the handset, you will immediately notice the difference between the company's not so distant past and present. With the XPERIA S, Sony's new era is here.
