Sony Ericsson announced monumental losses for 2011. This is one of the reasons the Japanese tech giant Sony decided to purchase Ericsson's share of the partnership. This also means that we should expect better things for 2012. One of Sony's attempts to get back in the game is its new smartphone the XPERIA S.

This new handset was officially unveiled at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) at Las Vegas in January of this year. It is unlike any handset the former Sony Ericsson had to offer. It is unlike the XPERIA Arc S or the XPERIA Play and their single-core processors. This new handset sports a dual-core processor and more.

Sony's new handset packs a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor under the hood. This is even more powerful compared to the 1.2 GHz dual-core processor of the highly popular Samsung Galaxy S2. Another handset that shares the same Qualcomm processor is the Beats Audio-packing HTC Sensation XE. This means that the smartphone will allow you to enjoy from performance unsurpassed by many phones in the market.

When it comes to cameras, this new release comes with a superior camera sensor. It sports a 12 megapixel camera that can record videos at 1080p. Not even the top sellers in the market come with this much megapixel counts. The Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation, and Apple iPhone 4S all sport an 8 megapixel camera. The XPERIA S also comes with a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera that can record videos at 720p. It is mainly used for capturing self portraits and video calls.

Since this smartphone is a new release, you might expect it to ship running the latest mobile OS Google has to offer Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). However, you might be disappointed that it ships running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Don't let this get your spirits down. Sony has announced that Ice Cream Sandwich will roll out to its XPERIA handsets in late March of this year. This means that you won't have to wait too long to enjoy the latest iteration of Android on the XPERIA S.

The smartphone sports a 4.3 inch LED-backlit LCD touch screen that has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. This display is protected with scratch-resistant glass. The display is also powered by Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine. This means that you will get to enjoy from cutting-edge noise reduction that will make your videos and pictures look more lifelike.

In terms of overall looks, this new handset will not disappoint. It sports a svelte design that will definitely turn heads. In terms of performance, it comes packed with powerful hardware that will allow you to enjoy more from your multi-media and games.

This is what the XPERIA S has to offer under the hood.
