There are several reasons why you should be using the stainless steel for any construction. Well, they are tough, light and they don’t. Another very important advantage of the stainless steel is that it can be fabricated easily with the help of standard techniques for fabrication. In fact, in some of the cases, the fabrication can be even greater than the typical carbon steels. This is even more true with the general austenitic grades that can be roll formed, bent, folded, and hot and cold forged. However, the only drawback with all these operations with the stainless steel sheet is that they are stronger than the carbon steel. Therefore, to modify their shapes, one must use heavier machines. Also, you must give it some allowance to spring back to some extent.

However, if you have understood the drawbacks, you must also understand the advantages of using stainless steel for this purpose. Basically, the stainless steel does have high ductilities. Therefore, they are better equipped to be heavily cold formed into items like deep drawn laundry troughs. So, in spite of having high strengths and high work hardening rate, stainless steel can indeed be a good choice for fabrication. In fact, there are not many other materials that are capable of achieving this amount of deformation without splitting out.

Work hardening is a process that is followed by every metal after the cold worked. However, the extent of the hardening varies according to the selected grade. Now, the austenitic stainless steel work harden very quickly. This property of austenitic steel has made them very useful in situations where the perfect combination of corrosion resistance and high strength is needed. Therefore, this alloy is widely used to manufacture springs for corrosive environment.

However, one must realize here that work harden is the only process through which the austenitic stainless steel can be actually toughened. This is where the martensitic stainless steel will offer some more options. For, they can be hardened like the low alloy and carbon steels with the simple use of quench and temper thermal treatments. On the other hand, the Ferritic stainless steels can’t be hardened by any other process than the cold working as is the case with the austenitic grades. But, the downside is that they have a low hardening rate. Therefore, you can’t achieve a substantial improvement in strength.

Naturally, it is important that you choose the right alloy to get the optimum result in steel fabrication. And as you can see this issue can be complicated enough to confuse a less experienced person. So, it is better to leave it to the professionals.
