Aluminum fabrication is one of the most popular options these days. Well, there are several advantages of using this option and this is why people are opting for it. However, for the professionals, there are some challenges involved in the aluminium fabrications. For example, they must design the right plan for achieving what is desired. This includes the proper selection of equipments and materials to be used for the fabrication. Well, the exact selection of tools will largely depend on the type of assignment at hand. This is where the experience and thorough understanding of the objective is crucial. Still, there are some issues that must be kept in mind while selecting the equipments etc. for aluminium welding.

One of the most complicated challenges that even the most experienced welders face when fabricating the aluminium alloys is their high thermal conductivity coupled with the low melting point. This means that if you don’t take proper care at every stage of the operation, the aluminium alloy may burn out. Another complicated challenge is the feeding of the aluminium welding wire at the time of gas metal arc welding. This is because the wire is softer than that of steel, it has lower column strength. So, it tends to tangle at drive roll.

Fortunately, there are some methods through which these and other challenges regarding the aluminium welding can be faced. Well, for that, the first thing that the professionals need to do is to make sure that there is no hydrocarbon or aluminium oxide mixed in the base material and cutting solvents. This is because the aluminium oxide has the melting point almost three times higher than the base material aluminium. However, to remove the aluminum oxide, you should use etching solutions, and solvents. You can also use stainless steel brush. However, make sure that you are brushing it in one direction. On the other hand, if you are using the chemical solvents, make sure that you have removed it before you start welding.

The next important step is preheating. This is important because if it is done properly, it will prevent the aluminium work piece from cracking at the time of welding. However, you have to monitor the preheating to ensure that the temperature is not crossing the 230 F mark. Otherwise, the base material will get overheated causing adverse effects. You can place the tack welds at the end or the beginning of the area that needs welding to preheat the area. If you are welding the thick piece into a thin piece of aluminum, preheat the think one.
