Here are just a few of the games available for smartphones that run on the Google Android operating system. Some of them are great, some of them are not so great, but they are all at least free to download:
Girl Skip - Imagine a cross between Hopscotch and Minesweeper, with some cool Manga visuals, and you are half way there. The aim is to clear a dangerous grid made up of ones, twos, and wildcards, with a combination of deduction and guesswork. The programmers have thoughtfully included a help mode, which lets you know what your options are every so often.
Hold em - As the name suggests, this game is based on the popular poker variant Texas Hold Em. The visuals are neat, and the computer is a mean opponent, but the controls let it down somewhat.
JK Connect Four - This two player only connect 4 simulator is a functional enough version of the classic game, with basic graphics and no extra features, but the lack of a single player mode means that you probably will not be spending a whole lot of time with it.
Light Racer - Based on the light cycle game from the visually stunning bore-fest that is the movie Tron, the aim in this game is to drive around like some kind of laser-age slug, leaving a glowing trail of light in your wake in an attempt to entrap one or both of your CPU opponents.
Lights Out - A frustratingly addictive puzzle game, which involves tapping invisibly linked lights on and off with your finger on the touch screen, in an attempt turn the grid completely black. Superb.
Lunar Lander - In this bizarrely bad game, the aim would seem to be to land your space craft on a coloured line, but without any instructions, it is quite hard to work out how, or indeed why, you should do this. Avoid.
ZeptoRacer - Another feeble effort, this racing game features jerky visuals, terrible controls, and even worse collision detection. The worst thing about it is that it makes your phone vibrate so much that you will be out of batteries within a few minutes
