Skoda has rationalised the Fabia variants (product content has completely changed). Each variant of Fabia is added/deleted one or other feature. The good thing with the change is driver Airbag which is made standard. Other features of Fabia includes front and rear fog lamps, passenger airbag, ABS, height adjustable driver seat, integrated music player and multifunction display.

Skoda as it claims, they are first manufacturer to create a new segment called superhatch few years back. But the Fabia which was launched with huge built-up bombed at the market due to its expensive price tag. On the contrary, Volkswagen the parent group of skoda surprised and succeeded with its Polo due to its competitive pricing. After learning lesson from its parent group, Skoda has come back with an all new Fabia and rational pricing. Can Skoda make the cut this time? Can Fabia take on the mighty competitors like Hyundai i20, Nissan Micra and Volkswagen Polo. We bring you an exclusive test drive on all new Fabia. Here is the review.
Skoda Fabia styling is everyone’s favourite. Now Skoda has given a facelift with a new radiator grille and 3D headlamps. The new Fabia also gets elongated fog lamps and two prominent ridges from grille to the windshield. These changes highlights the horizontal surface and make the Fabia more wider and expressive. The side and rear profile of Fabia are left untouched.
Gone are the 1.4L gasoline and 1.4L TDI engine, Fabia gets 1200cc gasoline and oil burner mills. The new engines are nothing but the same engines used in Volkswagen polo. The 1.2L petrol engine under the new Fabia develops 75bhp and 110Nm. The 1.2L TDI generates equal amount of power and 180Nm of peak torque at 2000rpm. For auto enthusiast, Skoda is offering a powerful 1.6L petrol engine developing 105bhp. The engines are coupled with 5-speed manual transmission
Our test drive Fabia runs on diesel. The new engine generates 7bhp more than the pumpe deuse motor used in earlier fabia. Switch on the ignition, the distinct diesel clatter is audible inside the cabin too. It is not irritating also it smoothens out as you move. You could feel the discernible turbo lag before 1800rpm but the surge starts from 2000rpm and doesn’t let up to 5000rpm. The wider powerband ensures Fabia demand lesser downshifting. On the highway, the new fabia TDI could be your best companion. However, the engine is not rev friendly and will not suit for traffic signal races.
On the inside, Fabia gets ivory fabric upholstery, chrome decor and chrome surround for instrument panel. Build quality is typically skoda. Switch on the A/C, it cools the cabin imminently. But sadly, there is no option of climate control in this luxurious super hatch. The elaborate reading lights at the front and rear are good. The reminiscent of sunroof controls are still there though skoda is no more selling Fabia with sunroof.. Over the years, Skoda has toned down the interiors of Fabia to be cost competitive. However the versatility remains, like the boot space and rear seat. The boot has a two step parcel tray and the rear seat can folded flat (by moving the rear seat base down you can flat the backrest )
Fabia retains the same suspension set-up and tyres. Fabia features the perfect blend of handling and ride characteristics. The wider track gives you the planted feel even while hard cornering. The composure of chassis and solidness of steering will amaze even if you are a race car driver. The bad thing it never thrills you, blame the larger 175/65 tyres and 1152kg kerb weight. We drove the car over harsh conditions where Fabia may never come across. Yet the car never unsettles and the ride remains flat.
Fabia comes in three variants – classic, elegance and ambiente with three engine options. Fabia petrol is priced between Rs4.35 lakhs and Rs5.99 lakhs. The price of Fabia diesel is betweenRs5.40lakhs and Rs6.69lakhs. On the road, Fabia elegance we test drove costs Rs7.75lakhs which is Rs1.15 lakhs less than its predecessor. For the reduction in money, the new Fabia lacks reverse parking sensor, driver arm rest, 60:40 foldable seat, A/C glovebox and rear washer/wiper.
