The benefits that a garden pond gives to its owner depend on many things. Examples are the things that depend on the water or the added features you put in it. However, the most important thing for you to do is to maintain the cleanness and natural state of the whole water feature. The ways on how you could apply care to your pond vary chemically, mechanically or biologically. These processes can be combined depending on your technique on how to fully meet the needs of the plants and other aquatic living things in your pond.
In order to have a well-maintained water feature right in your garden, the seven key things need to be remembered. The seven things include:
Water
The pond will not even deserve to be called as such without the water. It is the nervous system of the whole pond itself that is why it has to be kept clean at all times. Ideally, the water should be drained out of the pond and replaced for at least once in a year. If you water source is the faucet, which is what most households use, always remember to dechlorinate the water first before putting back the fish and plants in the water.
Pond Filter
A filtration system is necessary in every pond. Some pond filters work physically by removing the unwanted debris in the water. On the other hand, a biological pond filter has more than what a mechanical pond filter can offer. It not only filters the physical dirt of the pond, it also serves as a breeding ground for beneficial bacteria. Although pond filters definitely help maintain the pond be sure to clean the water feature yourself to ensure the safety of the creatures that reside in your pond.
Aeration
The fish in the water need ample oxygen to be able to live harmoniously with the other creatures in the water. Therefore, a good pond aerator is indeed useful. A waterfall or a pond fountain can do the job of pond aeration and at the same time, can prevent growth of algae and blanket weed because of the water movement.
Skimmers
The machines and supplies used in pond maintenance are not enough o ensure the cleanness of the water system. It requires your hands-on skills in skimming the unwanted debris like dried leaves and twigs. A pond skimmer would be very handy at this point since the pond filter will not be able to sieve all dirt that goes into your pond. If the water is shallow enough, it would be great to scuff out the dirt and silt which are formed at the bottom.
Chemical treatments
The work of chemical treatments is mostly on the physical attributes of a certain pond. Water conditioners and pond dye are a few of them. If you prefer to use chemical based treatments in dealing with algae problem, it is necessary to think twice. Algaecides are proven harmful to the fish and other aquatic residents you have in the pond.
UV(ultraviolet) lights
Sunlight produces heat that makes algae flourish rapidly in the pond. However, direct exposure to UV light will prevent algae from conquering the whole pond. Luckily, UV light can be purchased in the market and idyllically placed somewhere near the filtration system of the pond.
