Singapore is famous and well known for its economic competitiveness, talent attraction policy and certainly a green nation.
In addition to this, Singapore is also truly a tuition nation. A poll by a Singapore Sunday Times of a hundred students from elementary to high school found that only a mere 3% of students have no tuition experiences. The number of tuition centres across Singapore are at least a few hundreds, it is quite a significant number considering the islands size. Their total annual turn over is in the hundreds of million, even during the recession year, 2007. Not counting the number of private tutors which is ever increasing year after year, the potential for tuition business in Singapore is certainly huge.
Singapore parents generally have a very traditional Asian view to education, believing a child future success will largely depend on its education. As such the emphasis on their children education is utmost important to them. These parents, do not want their children to lose out to their peers and will not hesitate to send their children to a good tuition centre, in order to stay ahead. Especially for high school students which are all aspiring to get into a top notch university, H2 Mathematics tuition and H2 Physics tuition are specially common. For those who preferred personal attention and tailored guidance are likely to opt for a private tutor when it is affordable. These thoughts have fuelled the nation's tuition industry and as the competitiveness in Singapore Education rises, this industry will likely to continue its prosperity.
However, there are no regulations or standards governing these tuition centres or private tutors. As such, parents or students have to be vigilant in selecting the best tutor. An academically gifted tutor is important nonetheless, however interpersonal skills and communication skills are essential too. This is especially important for high school tuition, which involves more complex subjects such as H2 Mathematics and H2 Physics. For instance, a top H2 Physics tutor should be able to put across complex concepts by reorganising, simplifying and bringing it down to a lower level to its students.
More often than not, an element of luck is often required in finding a good tutor. It is said that the harder one try, the luckier he will get. Hence, one needs to be careful of details and do some background research in order to find a good tutor. The Testimonials of a tutor is important and one should pay particular attention to the writing style of these testimonials, as it could be written by the same person. Parents should be wary of agency sites as well, as they usually mention interview have been conducted with the tutor, but being a tutor for almost 8 years I hardly heard of such interview assessment being conducted before! Dedicated webpages of tutor and recommendations via word of mouths will be a safer bet. Trial lessons are uncommon at tuition centres too but do attend if they have one.
No doubt the tuition industry is growing, however finding a top and dedicated tutor will become increasing challenging with the growing number of choices available.
