Get in touch with your current provider. Most mobile phone companies have a large selection of tariffs to choose from, and if you find that you are struggling to cope with your current bills, then there may be other tariffs you can switch to. As a contract customer, you will usually have to have been with your current provider for a set period of time before they will permit you to downgrade your contract, but networks are surprisingly helpful on this issue. Basically, they would rather have a little less of your money than none of your money whatsoever.
If this is the case you are basically throwing money away. If you are using only half or less of your monthly usage limits then it is well worth talking to your mobile provider to see if they have a smaller, and cheaper, contract that you can switch to. Or shop around and see if there are any more suitable deals on offer from other mobile retailers.
Consider pay as you go. If you are on a tight budget and want to curb your mobile phone costs, then opting for a pay as you go plan could be the right move for you.
If you are someone who uses their phone only occasionally, then there is no point spending money on a contract that offers you hundreds and hundreds of free text messages and calls. You will have to buy your own mobile handset to use a pay as you go deal however.
With pay as you go you can really keep an eye on your monthly or weekly mobile spend, topping up only when you need to. Topping up is now easier than ever too, as you can do so by phone using your debit or credit card, by voucher, or in any store or at any ATM cash machine that shows the green top-up logo.
Many of us have experienced the horror of returning home from a lovely relaxing trip in the sun only to find our mobile phone bill has skyrocketed through the roof. You are sure you only made a couple of calls. But you did not anticipate the huge call charges, or the fact that you were being charged for receiving texts and calls too.
In the meantime, call and text rates vary from country to country, with countries outside of Europe increasing in cost rather dramatically. So do not get caught out, and before you fly talk to your provider about any special holiday deals they may offer.
More good news is that nowadays travel SIMs are also available that offer savings of up to 80 per cent on calls from mobiles overseas. Just pop the SIM into your phone, which you may have to have unlocked first, and you will receive calls for free and your own call and text rates will be reduced.
