Africanized honey bees are the result of breeding South African bees with Brazilian honey bees. Eventually these bees moved into areas of the United States and have become a rather problematic insect. Originally the United States dealt with European honey bees which have a much milder temperament as well as different habits. Because of the aggressiveness of Africanized honey bees, it comes as no surprise that people don’t want them anywhere near their homes. When one of their nests is even slightly disturbed, the bees will swarm and attack whatever is bothering their hive. These bees have been known to chase whatever or whoever disturbed their nest for over a mile. Where Do They Nest? Another difference from typical honey bees is that Africanized honey bees are much more willing to adapt to various situations when it comes to building a hive. They aren’t afraid to nest where humans live, and if they cannot find a suitable natural location, they will use whatever works best for them. That can mean bees attempting to build a nest in everything from boxes and old tires to underground and just outside of buildings. If there is a place that might work, they’ll take it. The problem with this is that you may not have any idea you are about to come across a killer bee nest. Most people are familiar with traditional honey bee hives, or at least have a slightly informed idea of where honey bees might have built a nest. But because killer bees take what they can get, you may end up walking right into a killer bee nest and never realize it until the bees have decided you are an enemy and decide to swarm. Africanized honey bees can be very dangerous because of this aggressive nature because even if you are not allergic to bee sings, too many can still have the potential to kill you. What Do I Do? Suspect that a killer bee hive is somewhere near your house or on your property? The first thing is to stay away from it. Keep others, children, and pets far from the location so they don’t disturb the nest, either intentionally or unintentionally. Next, contact a pest and bee control company like Slug-A-Bug and tell them about the issue.
