The first thing e-commerce site webmasters can implement to ensure the customer really wants to leave is to issue a pop-up message. Although these can be seen as an annoyance rather than a help, customers who didn't mean to exit the website will appreciate it. Plus, an on-site pop-up box can force the user to make a hasty decision, and they might decide to make the purchase after all. Just be careful when using pop-ups and make sure you really want to use them - and craft the message so it doesn't sound like you're trying to corner the user. Be friendly and helpful at all times, even if you really don't want to lose that sale.

Another thing you can do is set your site up so that an email is sent to the user after a specified amount of time(usually a few days) if they haven't returned to their shopping cart. You can also set it up so the email is sent soon after they've left the site, and it is less intrusive than a pop-up message. However, sending it a few days later is generally more effective because then it doesn't feel like soliciting and it will remind the user of the items he or she considered buying at one point. Even if you don't get that particular sale, you want to keep in touch with the user and keep your store in his or her mind.

Either way you choose to handle a user leaving the site, you should provide a perpetual shopping cart so the items added are not lost if the user has to leave for some reason. Sites that have implemented perpetual shopping carts that retain the users' choices have found their sales increased. Users like the option of saving items and later coming back to pay for it. That way it's there if they want it and they don't have to go through pages trying to find it again - and many might not even try to find it again.
