Printers for laptops have become a valuable accessory when traveling or at home. There are many office environments that allow employees to work from remote locations such as coffee shops. Many sales meetings have also moved to these more social environments. The important of being able to generate a document from any location has grown as the traditional office setting has been almost abandoned.
There is a difference between portable and compact. The portable style resembles a modified version of the ink jet printer. They are usually smaller, yet may include a battery. They also come in wireless or wired versions. These modifications are the same for the compact version with one exception. The compact version is much smaller and easy to pack. Compact also may have a lower quality print than the portable version.
The prices vary based on the size and options. Though most range between one hundred and four hundred dollars, the smaller ones tend to range higher in price. Essentially, you will pay for the convenience of compact sizes. The larger ones, while still portable cannot easily be slipped into a laptop bag to carry along. Some will have other options such as longer lasting batteries, USB recharging, or wireless connectivity.
There is no real standard in battery life. Often, the more compact devices have a lower batter life. However, there are many that offer USB charging capabilities, along with traditional power cords. If battery life is the chief concern, it is best to compare choices based on the manufacturers' specification sheets. In nearly all cases, the devices will power down after a period of inactivity.
The print quality may be better with the larger devices. The compact versions typically only print in grey scale. This is closer to draft print quality. The larger portable versions have a much cleaner print quality that is compared to the office version ink jet printers. Though most compact devices print in grey scale, there are models that have higher quality printing options. This will increase the budget slightly.
Choosing wired or wireless is a personal preference. It all depends on your desire to carry another USB cable to plug into your laptop. If you do not mind and have the extra port, it can save the hassle of having to find the device through the wireless connection. Some may have both as an option, letting you determine your needs as you go.
Your preferences and needs are the defining factor. The first step in the process is to decide when you most often need a device. If you travel constantly and do not have access to in-office print stations, you may want carry a much smaller device. If your choice is to have a higher quality device that is able to handle more sheets of paper, the larger portable device may be best.
Printers for laptops provide a convenient option to work away from the office and still print the necessary documents. They are reasonably priced, compact, and offer a full range of options. The price is determined by the need. Convenience over quality is not always the only choice available. Evaluate the need, then begin shopping to fulfill that need.
