Steel is one of the most widely used metals all over. Its versatility is due to its high elasticity and ductility. It can be processes in different ways in accordance to the need and requirement. Steel is basically made by mixing carbon with iron ore. A combination of iron ore and carbon alone makes non alloyed steel, whereas, the addition of other chemical components to it, makes it an alloy. The chemicals that can be added to it are, sulphur, oxygen, silicon and phosphorus. Steel is a necessary and extremely important metal found in any industry. Right from our kitchens to big heavy engineering industries, steel is everywhere, and it can be processed in accordance with the particular need and necessity.
Stainless steel, on the other hand is a form of steel that is made by adding chromium and nickel to steel. Stainless steel in metallurgy is also known as inox or inox steel that comes from the French “inoxydable”. Stainless steel contains a minimum of 10.5% to 11% of chromium in it. Stainless steel does not need a separate, coating of any other chemical component or metal. It is lustrous and shiny by itself.
Carbon steel differs from stainless steel by the content of chromium that has been added to it. The amount of chromium added, determines whether it is carbon steel or stainless steel. Carbon steel is vulnerable to getting rust when it is exposed to moisture or air. So, bridges, that are closer to water bodies and air that is high in moisture content or constructions near the sea or ocean cannot be made of carbon steel. Stainless steel comes as a messiah here. It does not rust, therefore can be greatly used to benefit the industries immensely. Stainless steel fabrication is a process that enables industries of all kinds. Right from building bridges, to making utensils, stainless steel is used everywhere and we just cannot do without it. A steel fabrication is a complex yet interesting process.
Steel fabrication can be done in two ways, namely, the integrated route or the raw material approach and the other is the electric arc furnace or EAF method. In the first method, all the materials are initially heated up and then melted down. Finally, these melted materials are mixed into being steel. The second process, that is, the electric arc furnace process involves recycling of steel. The recycled steel is first put into a furnace that heats it up and then it is melted down. Finally, to get the end product, it is mixed with other components. This is a much easier and quicker process. However, almost 60 percent of steel fabrication is carried out in the former process of raw material approach.
