I was recently invited to be a part of the Vidyashilp family as a judge for the annual debate competition for standards between 2nd and 6th grade. There were a total of around of 22 students. Each category had about 5-6 participants. Students were put into categories depending on which class standard they belonged and similarly topics for debate was given to each of them. With every student coming on stage there was a presentation of fresh ideas and thought process. Each student on the stage displayed confidence, clarity of thoughts and originality of content spoken.
My co-judges Dr. Archana Purushotham, Ms. Uma and me were amazed at the quality of students and intelligence displayed from time to time. They were all calm and composed during the whole process.
I must also applaud the teachers and organizers of Shilp Encounter for the choice of topics for debate. Topics varied from downsides of Interactive Media, are young netas as a role model for today’s youth, introduction of recreational trips and camps in school trips as a form a practical learning, a place travelled is more than a thousand books read and a person who has not travelled any place has not experienced life fully.
All of them demonstrated confidence in body language, discipline and were able to hold audience attention throughout the event. I was amazed at the immense knowledge of history and current affairs that the young minds showcased. Their ability to handle questions showed that the students had well prepared well for the topic laterally and not just by-hearted the topic contents.
The teachers, parents and students in the audiences displayed attention throughout the process by counter acting with smart questions. Therefore through my experience at this event I can say that education needs to be freed from the compulsive traditional approach and made dynamic in nature in order to meet the emerging global competitiveness.
Each category from standard second till sixth grade had one winner depending on the highest scoring student and another overall highest scorer of the debate competition.
During my discussion with Mr. Vithani founder of and Managing Trustee at Vidyashilp Academy, for inputs on the international education and the schools key differentiating factors for Comprehensive International Schools Survey (CISS) is that “our education system must have a holistic approach where we desire for knowledge and evolve – this should be coupled with proper facilities for self-experiencing while involving both teachers and students in various activities. Personality building exercises and continuous evaluation methodology is essential in today’s school education system”.
JustInternationalSchools is conducting Comprehensive International Schools Survey (CISS) for the first time ever, for all truly International schools in India on the basis of curriculums followed for example International Baccalaureate and Cambridge IGCSE etc. This survey is to help parents and teachers of looking for schools with international curriculum to make informed decisions.
Vidyashilp is an extended day school, with a programme of academics and sports that runs from 8.15 am to 4.30pm. Vidyaship academy emphasizes on learning and the design curricula, makes the education process more current, meaningful and relevant. The schools was founded and headed by the visionary Mr. Ravindra Vithani, who believes in a holistic approach towards education. Shilp encounter is an intiative of Vidyashilp academy which promotes education beyond the traditional classroom activities they have a entrepreneurship cell, a in-house vermi-culture making company handled and promoted by the students, various community services and industrial visits.
The school has both national ICSE and International IGCSE curriculum as per the University of Cambridge, UK.
