Shaving is a daily occurrence for most men. Follow this simple plan to enjoy a good, close shave every time, rash free!
Since the beginning of time, man has been entrenched in the daily struggle with facial hair and stubble. For most men, shaving daily is a necessity, and often involves skin irritation, cuts, and an overall unpleasant experience. There are, however, some steps you can take to ensure the easiest, closest shave possible, while avoiding as much of the irritation as possible.

Proper skin care is the first step towards a good, close shave, and is also something that most men are terrible at. Contrary to what you may think, you do not need to use lots of girly lotions and creams to have healthy, well-maintained skin. Exfoliating in the shower, using either a loofa or chemical exfoliating scrub is all it really takes. This will reduce dead skin and harmful oils, which both contribute to shaving irritation.

The best shave is achieved before the razor even enters the picture. This starts with exfoliation, and then moves on to shaving cream application. The shaving cream acts as a thin barrier between the blade of the razor and your skin. It works just like the oil in your car does to reduce friction and absorb heat. Select whichever shaving cream you prefer, but know they are not all created equally. The more modern “gel” creams have better lubricating properties than the old “foamy” options. They are also much more expensive.

Shaving cream is also best applied to a hot, damp face. Turn on your sink and crank up the hot water – as hot as you can stand it. You can apply warm water for a minute or so with your hands, or, the better option - lay a wash cloth soaked in hot water over your face. When the surface temperature of your face has dramatically increased, you are ready to apply your shaving cream.

Before beginning the actual shaving portion, be sure to inspect your razor. Most people tend to leave their blades on too long, allowing them to get dull and even oxidize. If the blade shows any sign of wear or tarnishing, replace it immediately. Dull blades cause a lot of irritation, and can even lead to painful cuts.

When shaving, be sure to move the razor smoothly, and with the grain. Shaving against the natural growth direction of your hair will most likely lead to bumps and irritation. Shave in moderate, straight strokes, and be careful not to “swipe” quickly at the end. This can cause cuts or irritation.

Be sure to rinse out your blade thoroughly and regularly. When the shaving gunk gets stuck in between the blades of the razor, it dramatically reduces their cutting ability.
After the shave, take a good rinse in hot water again, being sure to clean off any leftover shaving cream. At this point, it is a good idea to apply a good aftershave, and possibly a moisturizing lotion. Products with aloe and natural essential oils are the best to look into, as they have many healing properties and will actively work to prevent rash and irritation.
