Now a day, there are two Linux distribution offers their server operating system for free. They are –
1. Ubuntu (Debian Derivative)
2. CentOS (RPM Based)
You can obtain a copy of Ubuntu Linux Server Operating system from their official website. You can order a free CD/DVD or alternatively you can download the .ISO file from their site and later on burn it into a CD/DVD and make your own CD/DVD. If you don’t know how to burn and create the Linux CD, no problem, Official Ubuntu website offers a comprehensive tutorial for this. You can obtain free burning software over there and follow the step-by-step guide and you are done! Remember it is a Debian based operating system. The install process and other things are completely different from a RPM based operating system.
On the other hand, CentOS is a RPM based operating system. They don’t offer any media from their official website. But fortunately some magazines offer CentOS DVD along with their books. But if you want to get the latest distribution and don’t want to wait, then the best way is download the .ISO file and bun them with your favorite CD/DVD burner software.
Here is a step-by-step server setup guide –
It is assumed that, you age going to install Ubuntu Server Edition in your server. During this article writing, the latest stable version of Ubuntu Server is Natty 11.04. Installing Ubuntu Server is pretty straightforward. Insert your newly created CD or DVD in your server’s DVD Rom and restart the server. The system automatically detects the DVD and start booting from DVD ROM. Once the DVD is mount it will display a nice GUI with few options. Select “Install Ubuntu Server”. After that, the system will automatically start installing the operating system it self. Now you have to enter the Host name. Enter your desired hostname and hit “Continue”. After entering the hostname, the system will redirect you to the most important part of the installation; partitioning the disk. Be careful, in this section you will get three options. They are – Guided (Entire Disk), Guided With LVM and manual. Select “Guided with LVM”. LVM stands for Logical Volume Manager (LVM). After selecting the option, the OS start formatting the entire disk and setup LVM. After successful completion of the installation process create the user accounts and passwords. Once those processes are completed, the system search for software packages and offer you lots of server packages. According to your choice sect them and hit “Continue”. Now the operating systems search available packages from Ubuntu repositories and mirrors and install them into the server and finally reboot the server.
The last stage of the installation is – update the existing operating system for latest security updates. Simply log in your server and type “sudo apt-get update”. Congratulations! The system will update itself and your server ready to go!
