Despite HTC recently announcing a large number of new and forthcoming mobile phone handsets, much attention has been taken away from these models by another new release from the esteemed brand. The Flyer is HTC's first foray into the ever increasing Tablet market, but does the new unit match the excellent qualities displayed by many of the brands mobile handsets?
This release is somewhat behind the likes of Motorola, Apple and Samsung, who have all had tablet devices in the market place for a while now. There is however good reason for this in that HTC have been busy redesigning their excellent Sense user interface, optimising it for use on models such as this. With their mobile phones, Sense places the user at the very centre of the experience in that the way the phone works is designed around what the user wants and also what is logical. Thus the redesign of this interface looks to have the same effect, but on a much larger scale. The first noticeable difference is the homescreen itself, which besides being optimised for the large screen also now displays widgets in the form of a three dimensional carousel. As you would expect, exactly what is displayed is entirely down to you, thus via an internet connection applications and shortcuts can be updated accordingly. Whilst on the subject of surfing the web, the online facilities on this model are superb, offering an experience more similar to a laptop than a mobile phone thanks to both Adobe Flash 10 and HTML 5 support. Thanks to support of all three speeds of Wireless LAN, not only is your browsing comprehensive but also incredibly quick, with the device also sporting 3G for those times whilst you are on the go, which in fairness is part of the appeal of such a device.
The other elements that we have come to know and love about the Sense UI are all present on the HTC Flyer, offering not only high levels of functionality but also enjoyment when using the tablet. Many other brands have attempted aggregated social networking applications, but none seem to match the excellence of Friendstream. This service is basically the merging of your own phonebook together with information from sites such as Facebook and Twitter. This has two real benefits to the user. Firstly, your own phonebook is likely to be much more selective than your friends list from social networking sites. Thus you can receive updates from the people you really care about and not just somebody you said hello to once ten years ago. Secondly an array of information from such sites can me merged into your contacts list, thus giving you recent photographs, status and e mail information.
