Old age is a privilege you should be happy for. Even so, it's a stage in life that's easier for some than most others. For any one of us that are finding it harder to manage people on our own, the solution lies in senior day care centers.
In Long Island, nursing facilities are abundant. Sometimes, these facilities aren't always what we immediately need. Senior day care centers are not the same in the sense that they give the care you'll need during the day, but allow you to sleep in the comfort of your own house at night.

These facilities, commonly known as adult day services, aren't limited to just giving medical care. In addition, they focus on a person's social well-being. In fact, they come in three kinds. You'll find centers that concentrate on social interaction, those which prioritize medical care, and those that are dedicated to taking care of patients with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. There are a few that even go the extra mile and do all three. With regards to the services and daily activities these organizations offer, the elderly are taken into account.

What are the different services offered?

The objective of these facilities isn't only to give care, but also to enhance the lives of its clients. That is why they provide a wide range of services including, but are not limited to:

- Therapeutic recreation programs like gardening, crafts and arts classes, music therapy, cooking, and occasionally pet therapy.

- Light physical fitness exercises like stretching or jogging.

- Adult enrichment options like basic computer classes and other types of adult education.

- Field trips - location permitting, some facilities present guided trips to beaches, parks, or other establishments.

- Other social activities like book clubs, film viewings, and the like.

The above-listed activities are only a few of the services supplied with social interaction in mind. Besides these, facilities also provide health services that may include the following:

- Assistance with eating, walking, and toilet use.

- Simple health monitoring procedures including the checking of blood pressure, food and liquid intake, and the regular checking of blood sugar for clients with diabetes.

- Short term rehab in the forms of physical, occupational, or speech therapy. Counseling and other mental health services may also be provided. This is especially true for centers that accommodate clients with advanced onset Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

What are the advantages of registering in a center instead of a nursing home?

Senior day care centers are useful to both the client that takes part and the primary caregiver that chooses to acquire the service. For the client, they are assured of daily assisted medical care from professionals. Apart from this, the recreational and educational benefits are also worth mentioning. Also, being with peers will promote socialization and a feeling of preserved independence.

Caring for the elderly around the clock can be a demanding job. Signing up an elderly loved one in a center will allow the primary caregiver to rest, and in some cases, even return to work in Long Island. Nursing homes have also been shown to be more costly, as five day participation at a center comes for a fraction of the price of long-term residential care. For families looking to keep their elderly loved ones safe during the day, but home at night, adult day services is the answer.
