No democracy can survive without a self-disciplined population. Preserving our democratic way of life requires that we teach our youngsters the true meaning of patriotism: “There is no freedom without responsibility”. This statement doesn’t mean that a child should be knowledgeable enough to understand the responsibilities. Expectations from the side of the parents, teachers and other persons depend on the maturity level of the children. For example, if a child is 3 year old, we can expect the child to be aware of all the right ways of life. Kids basically learn the art of being responsible from their parents and elders.
When they observe their citing good example before them, they also started admiring the same thing. Our community or society also plays a vital role in teaching kids different life skills. Most kids don’t have much internal motivation to be responsible, so the parent’s guidance can prove fruitful in this regard. When our children are young, it’s best not to overload them with a bulk of tasks. Instead, ask them to accomplish fewer tasks, but make sure they follow through and do them. Teaching kids self-discipline and to be responsible is very important for their future life also. Being parents, we can’t accompany our kids in every walk of life. They need to understand their freedom and limitations so that they can become a competent survivor in life. We can help our kids to develop these skills through the following means:-
• One of the best ways to nurture responsible behaviors among your kids is to set good example before them. Put your car keys where they belong instead of on the dining table. This will set an example before your child a lesson about how to be disciplined and responsible
• Depending on your child’s age, provide the child some tasks to accomplish. For example, if your child is in the middle school, you can seek for your child’s help while maintaining the monthly account for grocery expenses. By this means the child will develop a feeling that the child is capable enough to take the responsibilities
• Set a routine for the child and yourself to be followed every day. A routine teaches us the skills of time management, and also enables us to accomplish out tasks properly
• We often scold our kids when the show some kind of annoyed behavior. But this can destroy the inner innocence of the kids and they will start showing more such behavior. So always try to avoid this. Try to make your child understand your point of view
• Kids are going to mess up. That's part of being a kid. But you can usually get more compliance when they realize there's a pattern. So try not to express anger or disappointment if your grade-schooler's having an off day
• If you give your child a task, don’t expect the child to accomplish it perfectly. The child may do some mistake while doing the task. But instead of critiquing the child, you should appreciate the effort that the child had made. Remember that, criticizing or co-opting the work will only destroy the child’s desire to be responsible.
Keep in mind that, for most children, accepting responsibility is a learned behavior, like manners or taking turns. So the next time you run any of the awkward situations, use it as an opportunity to teach your child how to react appropriately.
