Shopping for a jar candle should be an easy task. After all, you walk down the candle aisle, see the jar size and color that catch your eye and presto! A great jar candle is now in your basket. Not so fast! Selecting a great jar candle takes a bit more effort, but the time is worth it. Read the tips below and learn how you can select a jar candle that makes you smile every time you light its wick.
- Consider the source of the 'wax'. Many substances of similar qualities are considered to be wax, but that does not mean that they burn the same. Often, candles manufactured today feature paraffin as the wax component, but it is still possible to find petroleum-based waxes as well as animal fat-derived waxes. None of these is inherently bad; personal preference often dictates the type of wax one prefers. Paraffin candles can be unscented or scented, and gel candles offer a luminescent glow. A new favorite on the candle market is soy, which is translated into hydrogenated vegetable oil. Soy candles are a natural alternative to standard waxes, and they last longer. Devotees claim that scents infused in soy tend to linger longer as well, and they produce little to no soot. Considered to be 'green', a soy candle is a great purchase for the environmentally conscious consumer.
- Take a good look at the jar. Is it solid? Are there any cracks? If the answer is ‘yes,’ buy another candle. Fissures in the glass can allow wax to seep through, making a thorough mess of the area and presenting a dangerous situation when the candle burns down.
- Take a deep breath. Depending on its size, that jar candle may be in good working order for a while. You’ll want to ensure that its scent does not make you sneeze. Imagine your room enveloped in this scent. If the idea makes you gag, move on to a more delicately scented jar candle. Blends that are pleasing to most people are often infused with natural vanilla oils. Lemon-scented jar candles are a favorite for the kitchen area, and the soothing aroma of lavender is found in many a bedroom. Make sure you consider your guests as well when you select a scented jar candle. Lighting a sugar cookie jar candle when your friend is on Weight Watchers is downright cruel.
