You most likely take your eyesight for granted, forgetting that it is natural for it to worsen with age. That natural process, however, can be slowed down, so maybe it’s time you started looking after your eyes too.
On the subject of keeping healthy, you recognize the need to consume smaller amounts of carbs, not to mention fats and sugars, as well as the need to exercise more, yet as when it comes to more than being in good shape, you don’t know much. If you want to be really healthy, you need a more active approach, you need to start looking after yourself better. And speaking of looking, you most likely take your eyesight for granted, forgetting that it is natural for it to worsen with age. That natural process, however, can be slowed down, so maybe it’s time you started looking after your eyes too.

You’re already making sure you eat well for a strong, trim body, so it should be fairly simple to make some diet alterations to help enhance your eyesight’s longevity. Begin by adding more Omega 3 rich fish, like wild salmon, mackerel or herring, since Omega 3 fatty acids are known for their overall eye health improving properties. Aside from fish reach for eye friendly fruit and vegetables. Avocados provide good amounts of lutein, which is believed to keep your eyes safe from oxidative stress; tomatoes provide vitamin C and lycopene, which can help prevent macular degeneration; and carrots provide vitamin A, necessary for retina to create a metabolite important for color vision. Aside from Omega 3 fatty acids, lutein, lycopene and Vitamin A, zinc, vitamin B12 and vitamin D are also beneficial for your eyes and thus worth including I your menu. .

Just because you start eating more Omega 3 rich fish, though, doesn’t mean you don’t have to do anything else for your eyes. Spending long hours in front of your computer screen or TV, reading a lot or driving long distances results in your eyes getting tired and weaker. If you can, start limiting your time looking at pages upon pages of digital or printed text or behind your wheel, and if you can’t do that, at least earn a few brief strengthening exercises and tricks that will let your eyes rest. Fast blinking, looking at objects near and far taking turns frequently or looking up, down, left and right several times will be a great workout for your eyes. And when you finally can give your eyes a break, take your lenses out, apply a calming compress and keep your eyes closed in the dark for a few minutes.

When it comes to lenses, whether you wear contacts or glasses, or you only need sunglasses, make sure you have the right prescription and quality. Regularly visit your doctor for check ups so your lenses can be adjusted as soon as it’s necessary, and invest in good quality glasses rather than buying fashionable yet not protecting tinted lenses. And remember that no matter what your vision, sunglasses are a must, and not only for sunny July, but on any sunny day, even if there are two feet of snow outside.

Right now you may have 20/20 vision and never experience eye pain, but that is not going to last forever. And just because your eyes are perfectly fine now doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of them. It’s better to take preventative measures than suffer later on, so not only should you eat for your eyes and exercise tem, you should also make sure your screen settings are not harming you, the lights in your home are well adjusted and you have good habits regarding wearing glasses and contact lenses.
