Muffins are one of the easiest baked goods to make. It comes close second to cookies! You and your child can actually make muffin making a bonding activity. The most wonderful thing about muffins is that they can be a delicious breakfast or a snack. You can make it during weekends and munch on them all day. There is a world of methods for making and baking the perfect muffins every time.
If you have ever wondered about the secret to baking perfect muffins, remember that there are several factors that contribute to a great tasting muffin.
First, you must make sure you have all the ingredients ready and that you understand all the baking terms. The difference in taste and texture also lies in the way you mix all the ingredients together. So pay close attention on the way you combine the ingredients in the mixing bowl.
Start with a Big, Sturdy Bowl
If you want to get the best results from mixing the ingredients together, you must use a big, strong bowl. Large bowls allow you to stir in ingredients together without the mess. Glass bowls are recommended because their weight prevents them from tilting and they are easy to clean. You want a bowl that can easily accommodate all the ingredients and still have space in it.
Tried and Tested Mixing Method
As with all other baked goods, you should always start by separating the dry ingredients (flour, sugar) from the wet ingredients (egg, oil, milk, water). Make sure the dry ingredients are sifted to get rid of the lumps. Put the dry ingredients in the bowl and create a hole in the middle using your fingers. Gradually pour the wet ingredients inside the hole you made.
Fold, Don’t Stir
Instead of stirring the batter, fold the ingredients together. This is done by lightly mixing the ingredients in a folding manner. You don’t want to over-mix the batter. Otherwise the muffin will become tough. It is also not advisable to use power mixers when baking muffins. This could also overwork the batter. The most recommended method of mixing muffin ingredients is the good old fashioned hand mixing.
Toss nuts and fruits When Your Halfway Done
Don’t add in the nuts and fruits too early. Doing so will cause the nut’s flour coating to wash off. Add the nuts and fruits too late and you could end up with unevenly distributed filling. So, put the nuts and fruits when you are halfway done.
Don’t fill the Cups with Batter
Pour in batter into the mold until the cup is ¾ full. Anything more than that could cause unevenness in the shape of the muffins. You may use an ice cream scoop to make sure that the mold is not too full.
Allow Muffins to Sit
After removing the muffins from the oven, let them sit in the baking sheet for awhile to keep them from falling apart. When it is cool enough, you may start removing them from the molds. Be sure not to keep the muffins sitting on the sheet for too long though. This may cause the muffins to get soggy.
