The philosophy of the school room in one generation contributes to the philosophy of the next generation”. In a materialistic way, school can be defined as an institution designed for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers. But a school is more than that. It’s not the four walls that form a school; but it’s the teachers, children and their relation that gives shape to a school. A school can well be compared to a potter’s workshop, where teachers are the competent potters who shape the soft clay like children and transform them into valuable antique pieces.
Thus a child’s overall development depends largely on their relation with the teachers and the school environment. The basic foundation of knowledge of a child is laid by the school; it is thus a powerhouse of knowledge. When a child enters to the world of schooling for the first time, the child experiences a mixed feeling of joy, excitement and fear. This feeling occurs due to the new environment that the child is entering into. But it’s the school environment that makes the child feel free to gel up in the school setting. In schools, some remain only classmates; while some get close only to become good friends for many years or even lifetime.
Establishing a positive classroom environment where students are respectful of themselves and others will help reduce the risk of conflict. There are various aspects that contribute to make the school environment more compatible. One of them is the actual physical appearance of the classroom. Children generally don’t like congested rooms. So the classroom should be spacious. The furniture of the classrooms should also be child friendly; these should not be sharp edged. Another thing to be considered is the lighting condition. The class rooms should be well illuminated.
There should also be the way through which natural light can enter the room. The classrooms should also consist of essential elements that are needed for the children to develop their different expertise. Apart from the class rooms, the school should have good sanitation and play facilities, because these play a vital role in a child’s developmental process. Safety measures should also be taken care of because a child should feel safe inside te school. Several studies have been conducted in the area of open-space classrooms and their effect on teacher attitudes. It was found that teachers housed in open-space classrooms showed more positive attitudes.
Apart from the physical aspects, a positive learning environment is very much needed for a child’s healthy growth. When children get a supportive environment in the school, they get encouraged and start taking interest in their academic works. Teachers need to develop a two way communication environment where both teachers and children can get equal chance to share their views and participate in the class activities. Gone are the days when school meant just learning the events given in a history chapter or solving tough mathematical problems or reciting poems and sonnets! Nowadays, school has become the first stepping stone in the life of a child, wherein the child learns a lot more than just rote learning. Modern day school equips a child with aspects like developing hobbies, refining them, teaching basic etiquettes, multi tasking skills, and social skills are only a few of them.
