High electricity bills have always been a source of constant worry to homeowners. While there is little we can do to reduce our energy consumption, we do have a few ways of reducing our electricity costs. One of the best options is to use solar hot water systems. Domestic solar water heating systems are the most popular of the various solar technologies and involve a set of tested designs.
The designs of domestic solar water heaters differ hugely based on the climatic conditions of a given region. The various types of solar water heaters include the most commonly used thermosyphon solar systems, batch ICS solar systems for moderate climates, solar open-active heating systems for moderate to hot climates, drainback systems and anti-freezing pressurised systems for cold climates. Depending upon the design of these systems they might use flat-plate or evacuated-tubes or batch collectors, pumps or the gravitational pull, anti-freezing fluids or potable water, storage tanks mounted on the collector or auxiliary tanks for functioning.
You can also use roof mounted solar panels. Not only will they reduce your energy bills but also increase the value of your property. Solar heating systems can provide for up to seventy percent of a household’s annual electricity and hot water needs. You can use the energy generated by the roof mounted solar panels anywhere in your house. Although, these panels do work on cloudy days, they do not produce electricity in the dark, and so at night you will need to use the electricity from the grid.
Moreover, you must consider a few things before installing these solar panels. The condition and direction of your roof along with its access to sunlight are very important factors. It must receive sufficient sunlight and be strong enough to support the panels for a long time. Although they can be installed on metal, slate, tile, asphalt and gravel roofs, their installation does depend on individual situations, climatic conditions, building height and seismic factors. Ballasted panels are more suited to flat roofs, while penetrating panels offer more stability in turbulent seismic conditions. You also have to keep your space constraints in mind as average residential systems occupy 400-700 square feet of space. Lastly, you must choose a BBB registered and well-established installer who has all the requisite licenses for solar as well as electrical work.
Another advantage of using solar energy is that in addition to helping us save money, it also helps us save electricity. Moreover, solar energy systems do not generate any toxic residue and hence, help us in conserving a greener planet for our future generations.
