The Samsung Group is a multinational corporation, perhaps best known for its production of electronic goods. However, the group now comprises of several industries, including shipbuilding, heavy industries, as well as engineering and construction.

It is by far and away the most famous brand ever to emerge from South Korea, and has surpassed even its Japanese rival Sony to lead the field of consumer electronics.

Unbelievably, this giant global empire began as a humble exporter of dried Korean fish. Its founder Lee Byung-Chull started the business in Daegu, Korea on 1st March 1938. He began exporting foods to Beijing and Manchuria, and within a decade has his own food manufacturing operations including flour mills and sweet factories.

Despite the hardships presented by the march of the communist regime in 1950, Lee Byung-Chull persevered, re-establishing his business in 1951, this time moving to Suwon. His trading company did extremely well, leading to the opening of a sugar refinery in 1953. From here, they moved into service industries like insurance and securities.

His efforts paid off and he was able to invest into other areas, even opening his first department store in 1963. It seems Byung-Chull had the golden touch and his businesses grew from strength to strength enabling him to develop Samsung Electronics in 1969.

Samsung certainly had some good fortune in that the Korean regime of the 60s and 70s was very supportive of the growing industries of South Korea, protecting it from foreign competition, and encouraging growth by investing heavily and offering government support.

A further boost came when the home electronics boom of the 70s hit. Whilst Samsung had been busy supplying the Korean market, electronics products were becoming popular the world over and this meant that the company was already equipped to supply the burgeoning global demand.

Nowadays Samsung still manufacture television sets, but they are of the LCD variety. The brand now specialises in electronics, engineering and chemicals, where they are at the forefront of mobile phone technology, digital products, and remain a world leader in the field of semiconductors.
